A Man Like None Other (Jared Chance) novel Chapter 6656

...

Once they were outside the estate, Master Veridian leaned toward Jared and lowered his voice.

"So Blackraven is the Golden Crow assassin you mentioned? Golden Immortal Level Eight?"

"Yes." Jared nodded. "He followed me, got caught by the Bermu City Guard, and has now been released."

Master Veridian grinned until his yellow teeth showed.

"Good. Then I get to stretch a little. Same realm as me, Golden Immortal Level Eight. I want to see how much skill the Golden Crow clan's assassin actually has."

Jared looked at him.

"You are not worried?"

"Worried?"

Master Veridian straightened his chest.

"I have strutted through the Nineteenth Firmament for years. I have never been afraid of anyone. Besides, the Golden Crow clan is powerful, but their home is not near Bermu City. As long as we are not fighting inside their own territory, I have nothing to fear."

Jared smiled and did not answer.

The group left Bermu City's gate and headed southeast.

After leaving the city, Jared and Gwendolyn walked in front at an easy pace, as if they were taking a casual trip.

Sunlight poured over the broad road and pulled their shadows long across the ground.

Low hills stretched along both sides. Short spirit trees and shrubs covered the slopes. Occasionally, a spirit rabbit darted through the grass and left a rustling sound behind.

Master Veridian and the young acolyte followed far behind them, keeping about thirty miles of distance.

The old man hunched over and walked slowly, looking like an ordinary wandering cultivator with nothing remarkable about him.

The young acolyte trailed beside him with a small bundle on his back. He chewed some spirit fruit he had found somewhere, his cheeks bulging.

"Master, why are we staying so far away?" the young acolyte asked with his mouth full.

"Because this is strategy."

Master Veridian stroked his beard and put on an inscrutable expression.

"If we stand in the open and the enemy stands in the open too, where is the fun? We hide. The enemy shows himself. That is interesting. When Blackraven jumps out to trouble Mr. Chance, I will drop from the sky and crush him in one glorious move. That is what you call style."

The young acolyte rolled his eyes.

"Master, you just want to watch the fun."

"What is wrong with watching the fun? A good show should be as big as possible."

Master Veridian spoke as if he were perfectly justified.

"Besides, Mr. Chance paid ten million crystals for me to be his bodyguard. I have to make the job look good. My entrance must be dazzling. My line must be powerful. My strike must be clean. I should appear only when Mr. Chance is in danger. That is how I show my worth."

The young acolyte sighed and kept eating.

Ahead of them, Jared and Gwendolyn had already traveled more than a hundred fifty miles.

The road slowly grew desolate. Spirit trees became sparse, replaced by bare stone and gravel.

The air turned dry. When the wind brushed their faces, it carried a rough, sandy feeling.

Gwendolyn walked beside Jared, her icy-blue eyes sweeping the surroundings.

"Will Blackraven really come?" she asked in a low voice.

"He will."

Jared's tone was steady.

"The City Guard arrested him in public. He lost all face. The Golden Crow clan values face more than anything. As one of their best assassins, Blackraven cannot let that humiliation stand. If he does not reclaim his dignity, he will never be able to lift his head in the clan."

Gwendolyn nodded.

"Where do you think he will attack?"

"The rocky slope ahead is suitable."

Jared pointed toward a stretch of broken stone about half a mile away.
