The square's noise slowly fell behind them.
Jared and Gwendolyn had already left the crowd and were heading back to the inn.
Discussions still rolled through the streets like waves.
Some Demonic Cultivators were stunned.
Some still could not believe what they had seen.
Some were afraid.
Some were curious.
But no matter what they thought, no one dared mock Jared anymore.
A man who could draw a Demonic Bow that had slept for thousands of years and then break it in his hands was not someone ordinary Demonic Cultivators could provoke.
As Jared and Gwendolyn walked through the narrow streets, the cultivators on both sides stepped aside.
Their eyes were complicated.
Awe.
Caution.
Curiosity.
But no one approached.
"Will the City Lord send someone to check on you?" Gwendolyn asked softly.
"He will."
Jared's voice was calm. "A Golden Immortal Level One human cultivator drew the Hadad Descent's Demonic Bow and used sigil-bane aura. No City Lord would ignore that."
"Then what are you going to do?"
"Wait."
Jared smiled. "If he wants to investigate, I will let him see what I choose to show him. This works out well. I also need him to help ask about Josephine."
Gwendolyn nodded and stopped asking.
They returned to the inn.
Master Veridian was sitting in the main hall drinking tea. The moment Jared entered, the old man grinned.
"Mr. Chance, I heard you made quite the scene. You snapped a demonic bow that had been passed down for thousands of years?"
"Already?" Jared was a little surprised.
"Of course."
Master Veridian stroked his beard proudly. "My ears are sharp. The whole city is talking about it. A human cultivator broke the Demonic Bow. A Golden Immortal Level One cultivator is hiding terrifying strength. He may be connected to the Hadad Descent. Tsk, tsk. Mr. Chance, you shook this little city hard."
Jared smiled and did not answer.
He sat down by the table, poured himself tea, and took a slow sip.
"Senior, there may be movement tonight. The City Lord's people should come."
Master Veridian's eyes lit up.
"A fight?"
"Probably not. Questions, most likely."
"Boring." Master Veridian curled his lip. "I thought I would get another chance to show my hand."
Jared was about to speak when his brow shifted slightly.
Someone was probing the room with spirit sense.
The strand of spirit sense was extremely well hidden. If Jared had not cultivated chaotic force and sharpened his perception to such a degree, he might not have noticed it at all.
The person behind it should be around Golden Immortal Level Five.
The technique was clean and practiced.
Clearly trained.
Jared did not expose him immediately.
He continued drinking tea, but the corner of his mouth lifted.
"They are here."
He set down the cup and stood, then walked toward the corner of the room.
That was where the spirit sense had entered.
Gwendolyn and Master Veridian looked at each other.
Neither spoke.
Jared reached the corner, raised his hand, and released chaotic force from his palm.
Gray light spread like an invisible hand.
It caught that strand of spirit sense and yanked hard.
"Come down."
A muffled groan sounded outside the window.
The next instant, a figure rolled off the roof and crashed onto the stone ground in front of the inn.
Jared walked out.
Jared sat across from him and studied him.
At close range, the City Lord's cultivation felt deep and difficult to measure. His Golden Immortal Level Eight aura was restrained, yet thick and steady.
Much stronger than Blackraven.
"Why invite me here?" Jared asked directly.
The City Lord smiled and did not avoid the point.
"I saw what you did at the square. You drew the Demonic Bow, snapped it, and used sigil-bane aura. That made me curious. Who exactly are you? Sigil-bane aura is a secret art of the Hadad Descent. You are a human cultivator, not a Demonic Cultivator, so how do you know it?"
Jared looked at him with calm black eyes.
"Hadad is my friend. He taught me sigil-bane aura himself."
The City Lord frowned slightly.
Doubt flashed through his eyes.
"Friend? Senior Hadad vanished tens of thousands of years ago. You are so young. How could you possibly be his friend?"
Jared's mouth curved faintly.
"You do not believe me?"
"It is not that I do not believe you. It is just--"
Before the City Lord could finish, Jared raised his hand.
A wisp of black baleful aura rose from his palm and hovered in the air.
It was pure to an astonishing degree.
So condensed it almost seemed solid.
It turned slowly, releasing an ancient, profound presence.
Sigil-bane aura.
Not an ordinary form of it.
This was the purest and highest-level sigil-bane aura.
The City Lord's pupils contracted.
His body straightened without him realizing it.
He had cultivated the demonic path for thousands of years. He was far too familiar with sigil-bane aura.
A regular disciple of the Hadad Descent could never condense baleful aura to this level.
Only a core inheritor of that lineage, or someone personally taught by Hadad himself, could produce sigil-bane aura this pure.
