A Man Like None Other (Jared Chance) novel Chapter 6753

He could feel the lines interfering with his senses. The gray fog around him began changing shape, and warped, blurred images unfolded before his eyes like a dream.

A familiar scene appeared ahead: the mountain gate of Azure Cloud Sanctuary, its bluestone archway glowing faintly in the morning light.

"Mr. Chance!" Master Veridian called from behind him, but his figure was turning indistinct in Jared's eyes, as though seen through a veil of water.

Jared closed his eyes abruptly and sent his chaotic force coursing through his body at tremendous speed.

Chaotic force was the source of all laws. Illusion arts were an expression of law, and all laws ultimately had to return to chaotic origin before him.

He transformed his chaotic force into the purest defense for his mind, then opened his eyes.

Under the cleansing surge of chaotic force, the illusions shattered layer by layer.

The mountain gate vanished, and so did the bluestone archway. In their place appeared bands of dark violet light. Like countless interwoven chains, they sealed the entire space tight.

Behind every illusion array lay another. Layer upon layer stretched onward like a labyrinth without end.

Even if the people who entered the fissure escaped the bone puppets, they would remain forever lost among these arrays, unable to find an exit. Once their spiritual energy ran out, they would die in despair.

That explained why the fissure had never yielded a living survivor.

"Close your eyes, all of you!"

Urgency edged Jared's voice. "Follow my voice! Don't look at anything around you!"

He thrust his chaotic force ahead. Gray light carved pale tracks through the void like an invisible engraving knife.

Wherever those tracks passed, the violet lines split apart like torn cobwebs. A narrow passage gradually appeared within the illusion array.

But the lines at the edges writhed violently like struggling venomous snakes, attempting to stitch the opening shut.

"Stay right behind me!"

The four hurried down the passage.

Gwendolyn guarded Iris closely. Tears covered Iris' face as she kept her eyes clamped shut, but she gritted her teeth and made no sound.

Master Veridian covered the rear, smashing apart the lines that tried to close behind them with one green palm imprint after another. Almost none of his spiritual energy remained, and every strike demanded more effort than the last.

They passed through one illusion array after another, each stranger and more complex than the one before it.

The last array confronted Jared with his fears. The void broke apart. Mr. Sanders fell. Josephine receded into the distance and vanished.

The images were utterly lifelike, every detail as vivid as a memory unfolding in reality.

The shock of his chaotic force made his soul shudder violently. Jared bit the tip of his tongue, and the metallic sweetness of blood briefly restored his clarity.

But he could feel his will being steadily worn away. Every array he broke delivered another blow to his soul.

He knew they would all die there if this continued.
