"It's a trap! Damian expected us and prepared everything in advance. This is the inescapable trap he set for us! Retreat now! Tell Calder not to come!"

By then, retreat was impossible.

Several points of golden light appeared at once within the shadows around the plaza. Like lamps being ignited in different directions, they illuminated the square until it shone even more brightly than daylight.

Three luxuriously dressed elders walked slowly out of the radiance. Dense golden divine light encircled every one of them.

The pressure of three Grand Zenith Immortal Level Two cultivators descended over the plaza like three invisible mountains, making it difficult for Kael and Riven to breathe.

Damian's voice came from the platform, leisurely and triumphant, like a cat toying with trapped mice. "Your Water Clan's stealth techniques are impressive, young men. You found the underwater fissure and made it all the way here.

"Unfortunately, I anticipated every step. My sentries knew where you were from the moment you entered the submerged reefs. I have been waiting for you for quite some time."

He stood at the edge of the platform with his hands behind his back. His golden gaze looked down upon Kael and Riven as though they were animals caught in steel traps.

Smug contempt filled his eyes. "Kael Maris, the outstanding warrior of the Water Clan's younger generation. Your reputation is well deserved. What a pity that you are too young and impulsive.

"Your attachment to your people led you straight into my hands. Did you really believe I was preserving Mira's life? That seawater and all 17 restrictions were prepared for rescuers like you. Now that I have captured two more, my leverage over the Water Clan has grown again."

Kael gritted his teeth. The chains devoured his Water Clan power, blurring his vision and weakening him until he could barely remain on his feet.

He could not fall. Mira was beside him, and Riven had also been captured. If Kael collapsed, no one would be left to save them.

His gaze moved over the blue chains while his mind raced to find a way out.

Then he noticed a crucial detail. Intricate though the warding sigils were, the seawater in the underground pool supplied all of their energy.

If he severed the spiritual connection between the pool and the chains, their restraining force would weaken substantially or disappear altogether.

Kael inhaled sharply, concentrated every remaining strand of Water Clan power in his core, and detonated it all at once.

Blue light burst from his body like a depth charge exploding beneath the sea. The shock wave spread in every direction and loosened the chains around him for a single instant.

This was his last reserve of strength and his only opportunity.

Kael tore his right hand free and thrust his palm toward Riven. A powerful current erupted from it and hurled his companion back through the circular opening.

"Go back! Hurry! Tell Calder that Damian has laid a trap! Tell him not to come here and throw his life away!"

Riven fell into the opening and vanished into the dark. He had no chance to answer and could only leave Kael with one final look filled with reluctance and worry.

Before Kael could determine whether he had landed safely, three new chains closed around him with even greater force.
