A warm and powerful presence radiated from Jared. It shared its source with the energy of the surrounding Water Clan cultivators, yet felt purer and more ancient, like the silent headwaters of a 1,000-year current.
Blue patterns glimmered faintly beneath his skin. They soon vanished, but their brief appearance had been enough for everyone to see.
The ancestral Water Clan origin power preserved in the Sea Soul Pearl was becoming one with his body.
Unless Jared deliberately revealed that he was human, no one could have distinguished him from the Water Clan now.
He looked like a cultivator born among them, purer than most and closer to their origin.
The white-haired elder was the first to rise. He walked up to Jared and circled him once, his clouded eyes filled with shock and wonder.
Hesitating, he reached out and gently touched the fading blue halo over Jared's arm.
The light jumped against his fingertip like a living thing, then docilely settled.
"This power..."
His hoarse voice trembled. "It is the origin power of our forebears. How could it have fused with an outsider?"
He stepped back and studied Jared in prolonged silence. "Young man, your Water Clan aura is purer than mine.
"I have lived for more than 10,000 years, yet I have never seen one of our cultivators possess an origin aura this pure."
Turning to Calder, he asked, "Does this mean...?"
Calder nodded. "The Sea Soul Pearl chose to unite with him. That is the guidance of our forebears. We need only accept it."
Kael hurried forward, delight and amazement in his eyes. "You truly don't look human anymore. You seem exactly like one of us.
"No, you seem more like a member of the Water Clan than we do. Your aura is purer than anyone's I've ever encountered. You could walk among our people now, and no one would realize you're an outsider."
Jared looked down at his hand and felt the vast, gentle power circulating through his meridians.
For the first time, he sensed an extraordinary resonance with the surrounding sea.
The water seemed to have become an extension of his body. He could discern the temperature and direction of every current and the slightest disturbance anywhere in the deep.
It was a strange sensation, yet it also felt perfectly natural, as though an ability that had always belonged to him had finally awakened, or a memory buried for years had risen to the surface.
He lifted his head to speak, but hurried footsteps suddenly sounded outside.
The frantic tread sent faint ripples through the water and carried unmistakable panic. Everyone in the hall fell silent and turned toward the entrance.
A young Water Clan cultivator rushed inside. He wore ordinary green waterscale armor, and anxiety covered his face. His breath came rapidly, sweat soaked his body, and even his spiritual energy churned in disorder.
"Calder! Something terrible has happened again!" His voice shook. "The northern outpost sent back more than a dozen poisoned clansmen. They're unconscious and barely alive. Several of them have already stopped breathing!"
