Cora yelled for Joseph from the riverbank, but he couldn’t hear her while he was in the water. She had no choice but to wait until he came ashore.

“Joseph, quickly pack up your things. We’re going to the hospital to save a patient.”

“Save who?”

“Ernest Ashmore. You should be very familiar with his condition. He’s on the verge of death, and only you can wake him up now.”

“I can’t save him! You weren’t there. If you had been, you’d know how risky the surgery was. Look at his condition. Even with all the prayers in the world, nothing can save him.”

“But Walt said you have a way…”

“Walt just wants me to take the fall. If you knew even a little about medicine, or cared about me at all, you wouldn’t be asking me to clean up his mess.”

After washing up, Joseph noticed Fiona and Wendy were nearby, so he got into the car to change his clothes.

“You really can’t do anything?” Cora could no longer tell whether Joseph was telling the truth.

“Yes, I really can’t do anything.” Joseph had a quick bite to eat before packing up his fishing rod and releasing the fish he had caught back into the river.

As he walked past Wendy, he said, “Even if you cooked all this fish, the patient still wouldn’t get to enjoy your fancy meal. You refused to take my advice, and now it’s all for nothing.”

“You…” Wendy glared at him, clearly provoked. “You’re just book smart and nothing else. All you do is talk. You’re useless!”

“You know nothing about fishing!”

Joseph gave a mocking smile, got into the car, and drove home.

Bernard spotted him as soon as he got home. “Go to the hospital now and save Ernest.”

“I’m sorry, but I can’t help!” Joseph said before shooting Bernard a cold look and heading straight into the bathroom.

Cora held Bernard back, saying, “Dad, don’t be upset. I’ve already spoken to Joe, and he said he can’t do anything.

“It looks like Walt’s trying to shift the blame to someone else. It makes sense that Joseph doesn’t want to go to the hospital.”
