Chapter 126
Joseph pulled up the surveillance footage, only to find the woman had already left. He then made a copy of the video files from the past seven days just in case.
Joseph noticed that when the woman was leaving the hospital, she was holding an insulated food container. This led him to suspect that she had a relative or friend hospitalized there.
After getting off work, Joseph swung by Bernard and Helen’s place. Helen had ripped into him over the phone when he called her that noon, so he felt the need to come and have a proper talk there.
Joseph played with Selena and Kimberly for a bit before heading to the study to see Bernard.
“What are you doing here? Get out of my house!” Bernard snapped, showing Joseph no courtesy.
“You guys sent Ernest there, and now you’re just washing your hands of him? If he isn’t transferred to Croma Hospital to receive treatment soon, he may not make it through the week.”
Joseph was annoyed as well, but he put aside his pride and pressed on.
“The Ashmore family will handle it on their end. If you can’t save him, then there’s no need for you to concern yourself with it. You can leave now.”
Bernard pointed toward the door, making it clear he wanted Joseph gone.
“Bernard, I think you’re underestimating the situation. Ernest isn’t just important to the Ashmore family. There are plenty of other people with a stake in what happens to him, and none of them wants to see him go out like this.”
“Who are you talking about?”
“That’s not something I have the means to find out. If anyone has the answer, it’s you. Oh, and one more thing. Have you found out anything about Marla and Natalie’s biological father?”
Joseph moved on to the critical issue at hand.
“Joseph, what exactly are you trying to do?”
“Isn’t it obvious? I want to know who Cora’s lover is. I can’t keep living in the dark. You two can tolerate having a bastard grandchild, but I’m not like you guys. You can afford to have no shame since you don’t have many years left, but I’m still young! I care about my dignity!”
“Watch your damn mouth!”
“And what good is getting angry going to do? What good would it do if you beat me up? Hell, even if your killed me, it wouldn’t change a thing. You still wouldn’t know who Natalie’s father is.
“Then again, being the loser that I am, Natalie is better off being anyone else’s child than mine. But on the flip side, what if Cora’s lover is actually a step down from me?
“Maybe he’s your driver, a salesman from your company, a drug dealer, a scumbag, a con artist, or a pervert. Who knows?”
“Get out!” Bernard roared, startling everyone else in the house.
