A Man with Nerves of Steel (Joseph Hart) novel Chapter 134

Chapter 134

After lunch, something occurred to Joseph. He asked Grace to leave first while he stayed behind in the room.

Sure enough, not long afterward, Fiona knocked on the door.

She said, “Joseph, I saw your car downstairs and thought I’d come up to look for you. I didn’t expect to actually find you. Hey, I smell a woman’s perfume in here. So, were you having lunch with a beauty? Do you think Cora will get jealous if I tell her?”

Joseph scoffed. “Your nose is so sharp you’re practically a dog.”

He knew Grace’s perfume was expensive and understated, the kind that lingered softly while masking natural scent. On the other hand, Fiona’s perfume was bold and flamboyant.

*Joseph, what did you call me?” Fiona sat beside him and immediately noticed the case on the table. Her eyes lingered on it for a moment.

Joseph explained, “I didn’t want to accept money from the patient’s family. But this can help me save lives, so I accepted it.”

Joseph stared at Fiona. “Unlike a certain someone who refuses to act even after I told her she has menstrual issues and breast hyperplasia.”

Fiona replied, “You’re making me nervous, Joseph. You stayed behind specifically to wait for me, didn’t you? Did you want to talk?”

Fiona had already spoken to the front desk earlier. The person who settled the bill for Joseph was a local woman in her 40s. So, Joseph’s explanation that it was a patient’s family member checked out.

Joseph said, “Cora’s probably fooling around with some man again, right? Honestly, she doesn’t have to be so guarded around me. She’s powerful enough to date whoever she wants. Who would dare say anything?”

Fiona responded immediately, “That’s a misunderstanding, Joseph. Cora’s at the headquarters handling family business.”

Joseph shrugged. “A misunderstanding? Fine, let’s just call it that. Fiona, if you aren’t here to cover for her, why exactly did you come looking for me?”

Fiona hesitated for a moment before she said, “Cora wants to know why you suddenly requested a paternity test with Natalie. Did you discover something?”

Joseph laughed coldly. “Fiona, your intelligence really worries me. Cora’s trying to play the victim, and she even sent you here to question me? Who’s she trying to humiliate?”

Joseph picked up the needle case and stood up, ending the conversation.

Fiona hurried after him, trailing him all the way back to the hospital. Only after he entered the building did she take out her phone and call Cora.
