Joseph scanned the list of incoming burn victims and saw that most of them were from the Ashmore family. The only one he was familiar with was Wendy.

Her hair had been singed away, and blisters covered her face and scalp. Her body was convulsing from the pain despite heavy doses of sedatives she’d already received on the way to the hospital.

Her face was done for.

Joseph suppressed his pity and sympathy, and he didn’t feel any satisfaction from her misfortune despite their previous conflict. He made sure to be a responsible doctor and did his best to save as many people as he could.

His work continued deep into the night. Only after every patient had been stabilized for the moment did Joseph finally leave the ward.

When he got home, Cora was still awake and waiting for him. He asked, “What are you doing up so late?”

When Joseph fell silent, Cora tilted her head and asked, “Aren’t you curious about the fire? Don’t you want to know if Grace was behind it?”

Joseph lay back on the headboard. “Is that something I should concern myself with? You people are fighting your own war. What does it have to do with me? I don’t know Grace well, and I don’t particularly want to, but my instincts tell me she wouldn’t do something like that. You would, though.”

Cora widened her eyes. “You… What’s so good about her? Are you planning on spending the rest of your life with her?”

Joseph shrugged. “After we divorce, I might consider her if I ever want to get married again.”

Cora’s expression turned cold. “You can forget about that. I’m never divorcing you, and you’re never marrying her.
