While Joseph was busy, Paige approached him, saying Dave was expecting him in his office.

“Dr. Hart, the higher-ups sent word that they want us to send our best doctors to the Traditional-Medicine Center for a consultation. An old woman there is critically ill, and you’re the only one we can assign.”

Joseph frowned. He quickly handled his work arrangements before joining other specialists and professors. With Marvin leading the team, they made their way to the Traditional Medicine Center.

The patient was an old woman in her 90s. She had cerebral atrophy, reduced cardiac function, and/multiple organ failure. To put it bluntly, medicine could do nothing for her, and her days were numbered.

However, the retired official and those above him still wanted to keep her alive. They insisted that the experts find a way.

The old woman’s family made demands beyond what Joseph and the other specialists could meet. The consultation lasted for about four hours. By the time Joseph had his dinner and returned to the hospital, it was already 8:00 pm.

When Joseph returned to the ICU, he noticed how lifeless the place was. It was unsettlingly quiet. While he was away from the ICU, several burn victims had suddenly deteriorated and could not be saved despite resuscitation efforts.

Joseph went through the patients’ onset records and the doctors’ emergency response logs. He even reviewed the emergency room footage, which was available to everyone. Everything followed standard procedures.

Was it really just a coincidence? If Joseph performed autopsies on those patients, he might discover a thing or two. But who would even support him?

Joseph had his suspicions, yet he felt somewhat helpless about everything.

The burn victims had already been transferred to the funeral home, their bodies completely unrecognizable. With the families’ consent, the victims would be cremated soon. Even if the families pushed for an autopsy, they would face heavy resistance and likely get nowhere.

Joseph wasn’t lying low out of fear or self-preservation. He simply had too many suspicions, yet not enough evidence. No one would ever believe him.
