A Man with Nerves of Steel (Joseph Hart) novel Chapter 182

Chapter 182

The next day, Joseph showed up at work. After changing into his white coat, he held the morning briefing and assigned the day’s work.

While Joseph headed toward the emergency room, Fiona stepped in front of him. However, he ignored her and instructed a nurse to serve as her medical guide.

“I’m not sick,” muttered Fiona.

“Call security and have her escorted out,” ordered Joseph, giving Fiona a dismissive glance before walking straight into the emergency room without looking back.

Before noon, Dave came to find Joseph for a private conversation. Dave asked, “Joseph, what happened yesterday?/ Why were you so hostile toward Dr. Quinn?”

“Is she planning to suspend me or fire me?” Joseph questioned.

Dave replied, “That won’t happen. You’re the best doctor in this hospital. We can’t afford to lose you.”

Joseph said, “I just want to be a doctor. If you want to build some new order in Jenton or turn the place into a political battlefield, that’s your business. It has nothing to do with me, and I don’t have the power to stop any of it.

“Just tell Dr. Quinn that yesterday wasn’t personal. I was criticizing the situation, not her.”

The atmosphere eased after that. They chatted for a few minutes before heading for lunch.

On the way to the cafeteria, Fiona saw a police patrol car that was parked near the entrance. Several police officers stood watch nearby.

Their presence kept Fiona from doing anything reckless. Otherwise, she might actually have tried to drag Joseph away by force.

Fiona sat opposite Joseph. Watching him devour his meal, she asked, “Why are you putting yourself through this? Why not just go back to the Lowell family? You would be living comfortably.”

Joseph snapped, “Why did Cora send you here? Does she want me to attend her family’s memorial service? Bernard never treated me like family. Why would I go there and humiliate myself?

“Does she want me to go home? What does she want me to do there? Sit there and look at her, the woman who has lied to me, and the children she had with another man? Am I supposed to accept all of that and pretend nothing happened? What kind of person does she think I am?”
