Afterward, Joseph didn’t say much to Cora. He drifted off almost immediately. When he woke up, it was still before dawn. She was sleeping soundly beside him, completely unaware that he had gotten out of bed.

“How many men have seen you in this state?” Joseph thought as he glanced at Cora. Every time he imagined her sharing a bed with another man, getting pregnant again and again, his chest tightened with pain and rage.

“Dad, where are you going? Are you going to come back?” Selena asked.

“I’ll wait for you. Dad, are you and Mom going to get divorced?” Selena asked.

Joseph replied, “That’s between your mom and me. It’s an adult matter. You don’t need to get involved.”

“So, it means you’re going to divorce her someday,” muttered Selena.

Joseph walked over and gently rubbed Selena’s head. When he saw tears gathering in her eyes, his heart ached. After a moment, he asked, “What’s wrong? Do you think you can’t live without me? You’re too fragile.

“You’ve seen what kind of person I am these past years. I’m not a powerful father. So, whatever happens in the future isn’t entirely up to me. The best outcome would be a peaceful divorce, but honestly, that’s probably wishful thinking.

“One day, your grandparents might have me beaten half to death, cripple me, and throw me out of the family.”

“Dad, don’t divorce Mom. Just stay with us like before. Mom-” Selena tried to convince Joseph.
