Joseph assumed Cora had sent Helen here to make such a shameless request.

It was obvious. Cora and Helen wanted him to accept being cheated on and live with it. They wanted him to watch Cora hide behind a facade and raise three children who weren’t his. They expected him to live in submission with no dignity, reduced to only existing in the background.

Cora would always remain refined and respectable, while Joseph was forced to stay in the shadows. Of course, he could never agree to that.

In the afternoon, Grace pushed open the door to Joseph’s office. Aside from wanting to see him, she also had a request, but she wasn’t sure how to bring it up. More like, it would be easy to ask him about it, but getting him to agree would be hard.

One more thing-Mavis would be arriving soon, and Grace wanted to reconfirm the ward arrangements with Joseph one last time.

“Joseph, over the past few nights, you haven’t been staying at hotels. You didn’t even go to your laboratory or head home. Where exactly have you been staying?”

Before Grace left, she finally asked the question that had been bugging her. She was not the only one curious. Cora had been dropping by almost every night, asking where Joseph was.

“I already told you. I’ve been going to motels that don’t require ID. I don’t even keep track of the places I’ve gone to.

“I just want a quiet place to sleep. I don’t want to think about anything else,” Joseph said casually, without telling Grace the truth.

Even Joseph found it odd that he felt safer and more settled in strangers’ homes like Lacey’s and Rosalie’s than in his own home. He hadn’t spoken to Grace for long when another patient begame critically ill, and he was called away.

When Grace found out Joseph had been called away for an emergency case and would even have to perform a surgery for God knows how long, she left the hospital. Halfway home, she received a call from Cora, who got straight to the point and asked what Joseph had said.

“Your husband would rather stay in dozens of filthy, rundown motels than return to your villa. Look at what you’ve done to him!

“You’ve completely destroyed this man, and now none of us can even have him. Tell you what-why don’t you just sign the divorce papers? Let me have him.” Grace smiled, partly joking and partly serious.
