With a hardened heart, Joseph didn’t say another word to Selena and drove away. One day, his daughters would grow up and learn that they weren’t related to him by blood.

They would have to face that reality and come to terms with it. And eventually, they would become strangers who happened to know each other better than anyone else.

Just before Joseph reached the hospital, he received another call. Upon seeing that it was a call from Brooke, he frowned and answered, “What’s wrong? Did you do something to hurt your mother again?”

Joseph was worried that Brooke had drugged Rosalie again and dumped Rosalie naked onto his bed like before. Brooke had no sense of limits. She was reckless, immature, and completely unaware of how serious her actions could be.

Without Joseph there, if Rosalie got caught up in another similar incident, it could put her life at risk.

Joseph had warned Brooke sternly, but would she listen?

Brooke replied, “No, Mom is doing fine. I don’t have those bad thoughts anymore. I’ve been listening to you, Dad. I’m cherishing my relationship with Mom now. We depend on each other. I’m going to study hard and improve myself…”

“That’s enough. Who are you trying to fool with that? You probably don’t even believe it yourself. Brooke, let me tell you something. You have to learn the difference between ignorance and rebellion. Don’t mistake your ignorance for some kind of rebellious independence. Is there anything else?” Joseph asked.

Worried that Joseph might end the call, Brooke quickly asked, “Dad, why didn’t you come back last night?”

Then, she passed the phone to Rosalie to reassure him that everything was fine.

“I’ve got work to handle here. When I’m done, I’ll come by,” said Joseph.

After ending the call, Joseph wasn’t worried about Brooke at all. Back at the monastery, the monk said, “Everyone you meet in life is destined to cross your path. Every encounter is a kind of fate.”

Perhaps meeting Rosalie and Brooke had been fate as well, but that was all it needed to be. Joseph had no intention of becoming more deeply involved. Otherwise, fate could easily turn into a burden.
