Just as Joseph wrapped up his work and prepared to rest, Helen’s call came in. He had no choice but to answer, and she got straight to the point. “Take the afternoon off and come home. Cora’s swamped, and Bernard and I are busy too. The children need you.”

“You already have a new son-in-law. Get him to handle it.”

The thought of the children seemed to tear open a fresh wound in Joseph’s heart. But he knew he couldn’t afford to be soft right now. He had to play the villain.

Once the Lowell family and Cora herself were in shambles and could no longer keep things together, Cora would naturally be forced to reveal the children’s biological father.

“Joseph, how can you still be so unreasonable at a time like this? Just come back when you’re asked to!”

“What’s the point of me going back? You all know perfectly well whose children they are. You want me to come back and live under the same roof as their real father?

“Are you trying to humiliate me in my face once more? You people are absolutely vile! Karma’s going to get you soon enough!”

“Are you coming back or not?”

“Don’t waste your energy and resources on me. Dragging this out with me will just spread your forces thinner. You should be focusing on how to survive the crisis you’re currently in.”

Joseph hung up. Not long after, Dave came over and said, “Dr. Hart, your family has been calling the office complaining, trying to get you to go home. How do you want to handle this?”

“Don’t meddle in my family affairs. Even the most impartial judge can’t settle family disputes. You’ll only end up offending everyone if you do.”

Joseph knew that was all Cora was capable of-using the power and resources she had traded her money and body for.

Dave knew Joseph was right, so he didn’t push it.

Still, Joseph took the afternoon off anyway, using the excuse that he’d been up all night. After leaving the hospital, he headed to his lab in Crest District, where he cooked up some more of his shady substances.

In the evening, the police came to the hospital, and Joseph was called back to give a statement. He explained his treatment plan for Kyle in detail, including the acupuncture.

That was merely a routine inquiry, so statements were taken not only from Joseph, but from all medical personnel and caregivers who participated in Kyle’s care.

Joseph didn’t leave the hospital that night and chose to sleep there. The next day, Belinda brought in a middle aged male patient.

As she had other people with her, she couldn’t say anything outright, but the look in her eyes made it clear that this was the target she wanted Joseph to eliminate.

After examining the man, Joseph determined that a sudden spike in blood pressure caused his vertigo. A preliminary check ruled out a heart attack or cerebral hemorrhage.

But since the patient was in a semi-conscious state, he needed to be kept under observation in the hospital.
