Chapter 278
Joseph cursed, “If you want me out of a job, I’ll make sure you lose yours too! What goes around comes around. Once all of you lose the power you’re relying on, we’ll see what you have left.”
Joseph was irritated, but he quickly forced himself to calm down and buried himself in work.
Later, he noticed Emma whispering to Theodore. The moment she saw Joseph approaching, she quickly stepped aside.
Did something happen with Frank? Or was she suspecting something?
An uneasy feeling crept into Joseph’s mind. Still, he had absolute confidence in what he’d done. As long as he didn’t want Frank to wake up, Frank wouldn’t wake up. The only concern was that brief moment of limited awareness Frank had experienced before Joseph completely shut him down.
But even so, how much could Emma possibly have found out? Frank couldn’t speak or write, so how much information could he really have conveyed?
And even if Frank had managed to communicate something, the fact that Emma hadn’t acted yet meant whatever she’d learned wasn’t enough to threaten Joseph. Otherwise, she’d already have made her move.
Although she avoided looking at him, Joseph still greeted Theodore before entering the room. During his routine examination, everything appeared normal with Frank. Yet, from the corner of his eye, he caught the disgust and caution in Emma’s gaze.
Something did change.
Joseph didn’t know what she had discovered, but he was confident that it would be impossible to frame him given Frank’s current condition.
Besides, Emma had only arrived a couple of days earlier. The moment Joseph realized something was wrong, he immediately placed Frank into complete isolation.
It seemed that both sides were harboring their own secrets.
Knowing that he was being observed, Joseph made no unusual moves. He simply continued treating patients as methodically as ever.
Two more days passed.
At noon on a Saturday, Joseph picked up his lunch in the hospital cafeteria and walked outside. There, he saw Cora waiting for her in her car.
“Honey, did you forget what day it is? It’s our special day.” Cora was upset, but Joseph didn’t even look at her as he walked past her.
It was the anniversary of the day they first met.
When Joseph was reminded of that, a wave of bitterness rose inside him. For more than ten years, he’d prepared a small gift on this day every year. Then, after a few sweet words, they’d spend the evening in each other’s arms. It was a perfect celebration.
But was there any point in it now?
Joseph merely glanced at her indifferently before continuing toward the ICU department.
As he entered the lobby, someone suddenly called out, “Dad!”

Joseph was surprised to see Brooke in the lobby.
Fortunately, Cora was behind him. Joseph shot Brooke a look, and Brooke quickly pretended not to know him. As she walked past Joseph, she said, “Dad, I’m heading outside. Wait for me at the southern entrance.”
She was wearing earbuds, so it looked as though she was speaking on the phone.
