Chapter 45
Joseph was about to provoke Natalie further when he saw Mary walking over. She handed Natalie the phone. It was Cora calling.
“Mom, I just came back to pick up a few things. I’m heading back to school right now…
Natalie could not avoid the call. She could offend Joseph, but she did not dare go against Cora. If Cora cut off her allowance or sent her off to some godforsaken place to study, she’d really be up a creek without a paddle.
Afraid that Joseph would continue bothering Natalie, Mary deliberately tried to get in his way.
“Mary, you need to understand your place. You’re better off turning a blind eye to the stuff between Cora and me. Do you really think you’d still be able to stay in this house if it ever comes down to choosing between you and me, or even between you and the children?
“And if you were observant, you’d have noticed that Natalie looked off. Besides not eating well at school, it’s probably that time of the month for her.
“Make her something good to eat and drink. She’ll appreciate you for it,” Joseph said calmly as he dried his hair.
Mary froze for a second. After considering it, she decided to listen to Joseph and went to the kitchen to prepare food instead of rigidly following Cora’s instructions to keep a constant eye on Joseph and Natalie.
Joseph didn’t know exactly what Natalie and Cora discussed in the room, but judging by Natalie’s expression, the conversation wasn’t pleasant. He opened a new bottle of wine, earning himself several eye-rolls from Natalie.
“What? If you want to curse me out, then go ahead. Don’t be a chicken. Tsk, tsk! Natalie, you really don’t take after Cora or me at all.
“You always bottle things up and back down when things happen. You must have gotten that soft nature from your father. Goes to show that he’s no prize either.”
