A Man with Nerves of Steel (Joseph Hart) novel Chapter 723

Chapter 723

Yara stared at Joseph in shock. “Why did you hit me? How am I supposed to explain this to Henry?”

Her cheek burned with pain, and the sticky sensation in her mouth told her that her gums had been split. She didn’t need a mirror to know there was a handprint on her face. Anyone with eyes could tell she’d been slapped.

“Can’t I hit you?” Joseph asked in return. He didn’t even bother coming up with an excuse.

Yara replied, “You can. I’ll just consider it something I owe you. I’ll make sure to repay you.”

Yara met Joseph’s gaze, only to find his gaze deep and icy. She was the first to back down.

Joseph was in control of everything at the moment. She had no choice but to lower her head.

Somewhere deep down, surrendering to Joseph even gave her a strange sense of relief and pleasure. A faint tendency toward masochism started to take root.

Joseph sneered. “Repay me? Can you really repay me? How could you possibly make up for everything you and Cora did to me over the years?”

Yara murmured, “I’m sorry. But you can’t blame everything on me. We had our own plans. You and Cora barged into the middle of them, and you became pawns…”

Yara realized she’d let something slip and hurriedly fell silent.

“Keep talking!” Joseph frowned.

Yara gritted her teeth before finally saying, “On our side, there were my brother and father. My father, Edmund, is already dead now. There were nine of us in total. More than 20 years ago, they planned to take over the Zahn family once Owen turned 100.

“Unfortunately, he just refused to die. He kept on surviving until my father and the others grew old waiting for him. Eventually, they died before he did.”

20 years ago, Owen was already a hundred. Probably no one expected Owen to live this long. Their entire plan had been built around waiting for Owen to die of old age. Since he refused to die, there was no way their plan could succeed.

Joseph snorted coldly, but remained silent.

Yara continued, “By the time I learned about their plan, they had basically given up. But I convinced my brother to continue. We’re young. No matter how long Owen lives, he’ll die eventually. We can outlast him.

“And we’re members of the Zahn family, too. Even if we have Owen pass on the family to us, it will still all be for the sake of the family.”

Joseph said, “So you and Skylar continued making plans behind the scenes? Give me something concrete. How much money do you and Skylar actually have?”

Yara said, “Joseph, this concerns my future. I’m willing to give myself to you. I’ll even have your child to make up for the harm I’ve caused you all these years. But please, leave me a way out. Don’t take everything from me.”

Yara looked at Joseph pleadingly.

Joseph stared at her. “Are you afraid you’ll die?”

Yara shook her head. “I’m not afraid of death. From the moment we decided to scheme against Owen and the Zahn family, our heads were already on the chopping block. How could I be afraid of dying?

“I just don’t want to die right now. Or rather, I refuse to die at this moment, especially now that you’ve given me hope of surviving again, and shown me a glimpse of a chance to accomplish what we set out to do.
