*Joseph, tell me what you know,” Bernard said in a deep voice.

Joseph no longer showed deference and fear toward Cora. Instead, he seemed unusually confident. Bernard wondered if Joseph had uncovered an important secret.

“I believe in science. Natalie isn’t my daughter. I don’t know about the rest. You’re an influential man; surely you know more than I do. Besides, a father knows his child well. You know what Cora is really like.”

“Suppose Natalie really isn’t your daughter, and Cora did betray you. What is it that you want?”

“When I first found out Natalie wasn’t my daughter, I wanted justice. I wanted an explanation from Cora. But I realized she is an unreasonable person, and so are you. All I want now is freedom. I want to end this marriage and sever ties with all of you. That’s all.”

“Isn’t money what you are after? You’re always talking about billions of dollars. You’re asking for quite a

lot,” Bernard said with a sneer.

“Would you give it to me?”

“The Lowell family’s money is never yours. I won’t give you a single cent.”

Joseph scoffed. They spoke as if he were a gold-digger.
