Chapter 98
Joseph quickly took another drag from his cigarette and inhaled sharply to suppress the dark thoughts. He kept reminding himself that he was a doctor-not a butcher, not a murderer.
“How close are you with my wife?” he asked.
Frank laughed. “You should ask Cora.”
“I did ask. She didn’t say, but I know she’s just trying to cover her tracks. She’s definitely hiding something. Since you’re already here, why don’t you tell me?”
“She didn’t tell you because you’re not qualified to know.”
“Not qualified?”
“Yeah. What’s your background? Are you even worthy of talking to me? You had nothing. You managed to step into high society because Cora lowered herself to marry you. But even with all of that, you’re still just a fake. A man needs to know his place. That’s important.”
“My father-in-law said something similar. He told me that my 20 years of studying and hard work meant nothing compared to the wealth and status their family had built over generations. It was like a firefly trying to compete with the sun and moon.”
“A wise man submits to fate. Get it?” Frank scoffed and left.
Joseph narrowed his eyes as he watched Frank retreat. He thought with boiling resentment that Frank had the absolute nerve to sleep with his wife and then mock him to his face.
Frank and Cora clearly thought he was a nobody. If they had simply owned up to the affair and apologized, he gladly would have divorced Cora so they could be together. Instead, they had chosen to humiliate him.
That was a mistake he silently swore to make them regret.
Joseph flicked his cigarette into the river. The glowing tip hissed softly before vanishing beneath the water.
“Mr. Hart, it’s late. Should we head back?” Ella noticed the sun was high overhead. It had been dull watching Joseph fish, and by now she was starving.
As Joseph packed away his gear, he asked, “If Frank and I had gotten into a fight earlier, whose side would you have taken?”
“But you didn’t fight. I wouldn’t help either of you. I’d just separate the two of you.”
“You can’t even defend my dignity, yet you still expect to keep working in my house?”
