Zach was wearing his reading glasses and reading a newspaper. When he saw them return, he quickly set it aside and stood up. “Oh, you’re back already?” he said warmly. “Kaia, make a couple more dishes tonight. It’s rare for Mason and Ms. Harlow to stay for dinner.”

Amelia changed out of her soaked shoes.

She felt bad about staying for free. When she saw Kaia heading into the kitchen, she said, “Ms. Preston, let me help you.”

She had only taken one step when a warm hand gently caught her wrist.

“Sit down and don’t move.”

Mason took off his wet jacket and draped it over the chair. He casually unbuttoned his shirt cuffs, revealing his strong forearms.

He turned to Kaia and said, “I’ll help.”

Then he followed her into the kitchen.

Amelia froze where she stood.

“Heh, sit down, girl,” Zach said, pulling her attention back.

Not long after, Zach walked over with a steaming cup of warm water. He sat down across from her and handed it to her.

“Drink this. It’ll warm you up.”

“Thank you,” Amelia said as she took the cup. The warmth eased the chill in her body.

Zach smiled at her, then suddenly went straight to the point.

“Girl, are you Mason’s girlfriend?”

“Cough, cough.” Amelia choked on her water, her face turning red as she coughed hard.

When she finally caught her breath, she shook her head quickly. She wasn’t sure if the heat on her face came from the cough or embarrassment. “No, we’re not that kind of relationship.”

“Oh.” Zach nodded thoughtfully, then blinked with a sly look. “I see. Not yet, right?”

Yes.

Her divorce wasn’t final. On paper, she was still Ethan’s wife.

No matter what was quietly happening between her and Mason, they couldn’t be anything.

“My silly granddaughter already has someone she’s liked for a long time. She hasn’t been able to let go for years. And I can tell Mason also has someone in his heart. So I never tried to play matchmaker again.”

Amelia immediately thought of Phoebe.

A sharp bitterness rose in her chest.

She lowered her eyes and spoke softly, almost like a sigh.

“That person is not me.

“The one he likes is someone else.”

But the moment she finished speaking, Zach’s firm voice sounded beside her.

“Impossible.” He shook his head without hesitation.
