Amelia’s hands were sweaty with nerves. She focused all her attention on keeping her body still. Because of that, she didn’t notice that the man who was supposed to be asleep had a faint smile on his face as his head rested near her shoulder.
For the next two hours on the road, Amelia stayed in that close yet painful position, becoming Mason’s personal human pillow the whole way.
Only when the car glided into the house and slowly came to a stop did the heavy weight on her shoulder finally move away.
“We’re here.” Mason sat up straight. His voice was still low and rough with sleep, with a hint of charm.
He rubbed his forehead as if he had just woken up, then casually opened the car door.
Amelia’s shoulder felt sore and numb. She lowered her head, unable to find any words, and hurried out of the car.
They had just stepped into the living room, a place that felt familiar yet strange, when Amelia’s phone started ringing.
It was Ethan.
She frowned without thinking, but still answered the call.
“Amelia! Where are you right now? Grandma heard that you’re hurt and is insisting on coming to see you right away.”
Ethan was back.
And he was being sneaky. He knew that if he showed up alone, Amelia would probably shut the door on him. So he brought the one person who could melt her heart—Fiona,
Amélia gripped her phone tightly until her fingers turned pale. For a short moment, she didn’t know how to respond.
Without meaning to, she looked toward Mason, standing not far away.
From her tone and her face, Mason quickly understood who was calling.
He met her worried look and gave a small nod.
Only after getting his silent approval did Amelia take a deep breath and reluctantly give the address to Ethan.

After ending the call, she stood there awkwardly, still holding her phone.
That was when Mason spoke, his voice calm and steady.
“You don’t need to worry so much.” His eyes stayed on her. “No matter what you you’re completely in the right.”
Those words were something she hadn’t felt in a very long time.

do right now,
When she lived with the Rowes, she had always been careful and tried to please everyone, afraid that she might not be good enough or that she might do something wrong.
Seeing the clear and steady support in Mason’s eyes made her nose suddenly sting.
“I’m going to change,” Mason said casually as he headed upstairs to his room.
Amelia thought that once he finished helping her, he would go back to the office work.
She couldn’t help asking, “Are you … leaving?”
Mason stopped and turned back to look at her. He raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised by the question.
“No.” His answer was simple.
Seeing the confusion on her face, he added one more line, his tone carrying a faint hint of humor.
“If I’m not here, that Rowe guy won’t be so easy to deal with.”
That one sentence instantly put Amelia at ease.
The stress stirred up by Ethan’s call finally settled down.
So he was staying to back her up.
A warm, hard–to–describe feeling of safety wrapped around her.
She nodded and didn’t question it. Then she used her crutch to head to her room and change into comfortable home clothes.
Not long after lunch, Ethan’s car arrived.
The car door opened, and Fiona stepped out. She was unsteady on her feet, with Ethan holding her arm for support. A maid followed behind, carrying an insulated food container.
