In the photograph, Amelia was beaming, radiant as ever, and Ethan looked every bit the confident man as he held her close.

When Fiona stormed in with the others, Ethan lifted his red–rimmed eyes, grabbed the nearest bottle, and hurled it toward the door in a fit of rage.

“Get out! All of you, get out!”

The bottle smashed against the doorframe, shards scattering everywhere.

Fiona didn’t even flinch. She walked through the wreckage, letting the sharp scent of alcohol wash over her, and stopped right in front of her grandson.

Without a word, she raised her hand and slapped Ethan, harder than she ever had before.

The blow sent Ethan reeling, his ears ringing.

He stared at his grandmother in shock, unable to process what had just happened.

Over the years, she had never laid a hand on him.

Fiona, her voice edged with pain and anger, demanded, “Look at yourself. Is this who you want to be?”

“You really think wallowing here and dragging down the whole company will make Amelia feel

for you? Do you think she’ll come running back just because you’ve hit rock bottom? That’s not going to happen!”

Fiona sighed, her gaze distant. “When the Harlows first arranged for Amelia to marry into our family, to be honest, I didn’t think she was good enough for us, either.”

“She was adopted, with no real background and nothing special except her looks.She hardly seemed a match for the Rowes, let alone my grandson.”

Grace nodded in agreement; she’d always felt that way.

“She’s independent, resilient, and determined. She has her own opinions and never gives up easily. She’s smart and capable–a rare find, truly.”

“I thought, if only Ethan could put his pride aside and really treat her well, she could become the best partner he could ever hope for, and she’d be a tremendous asset to our family’s business.”

“But what did you do? What did your mother do?
