Chapter 334 Who Are You?

Finisher

Mason walked over to an empty bench by the side of the road. Carefully, he set Amelia down and helped her lean back against the bench.

He crouched in front of her, lifted a hand, and gently patted her warm, flushed checks, trying to wake her up just a little.

Amelia,” he said, helplessness clear in his eyes. You’ve been putting me through this all night. What do you actually want?

The question seemed to flip a switch.

Amelia, who had been half out of it, leaned forward on her own, following his movement.

The distance between them vanished. Their noses were almost touching.

Under the soft glow of the streetlights, her long lashes fluttered. Her eyes were hazy, yet strangely clear.

She stared at him from that close and asked, Mason, don’t you like me?

Mason stayed crouched there, frozen, forgetting how to move.

The cool night breeze. The shadows from the streetlights.

Her flushed face. That stubborn, unfocused gaze.

Amelia looked drunk, yet not entirely.

Was this just drunk talk? Or was she using the alcohol to ask for an answer she had waited far too long to hear?

Mason swallowed. His heart pounded hard in his chest.

He looked into her eyes, which held an adult’s awareness mixed with a girl’s simple honesty.

This time, he didn’t want to step back.

Yes,” he said. His voice came out rougher than he expected, but firm.

He nodded without hiding it, even meeting her eyes with a hint of challenge. Yes. And what about it?

Amelia clearly hadn’t expected a direct answer.

She froze for a second. Then, her watery eyes filled with even more hurt.

Then why…. she complained softly, why don’t you ever say things clearly? You do things that make people misunderstand. I get hurt too.

Halfway through, her words fell apart. It was like she had too many feelings bottled up and didn’t know where to start.

She lowered her head and leaned weakly against his shoulder, like a small animal looking for shelter.

And also…”

And also what?Mason’s heart softened instantly at the gesture. All his sharp edges faded away.

He raised his hand and rested his palm on her soft hair, gently rubbing the back of her head to comfort her.

Her voice came from against his shoulder, muffled and quiet.

Feelings don’t last very long. They expire so easily. One day, they might just go bad.She paused. It feels like nothing in this world lasts forever.

Mason’s hand paused as he stroked her hair.

He finally understood. Under her tough shell was a heart that lacked a sense of safety.

So you really feel that insecure?he asked. His voice softened without him noticing.

Before Amelia could answer, a sharp phone ringtone suddenly cut through the quiet moment.

The sound came from the small bag hanging around Mason’s neck.

So noisyAmelia frowned in annoyance. She shifted restlessly in his arms. Mason, answer it for me.

Mason freed one hand and took her phone out of the bag.

The screen lit up. It was Henry.

The warmth in Mason’s eyes vanished in an instant.

Are you sure?he asked, looking down at her. His tone gave nothing away.

Mmm,Amelia answered with her eyes closed, clearly impatient.

A sharp light flashed in Mason’s eyes. He swiped the screen and answered the call.

What do you want?he asked directly.

The person on the other end froze. After a few seconds of silence, a hesitant voice came through. Excuse me, is this Ms. Amelia’s number?
