Chapter 347 A Very Sensible Detour

Even though there was still a long flight of steps between her and the café, the goal was right there in sight. That was enough to give her a sudden burst of energy and squeeze out her last bit of strength.

Amelia turned at once and headed toward the café, full of excitement. Her steps were light and quick, nothing like the state she’d been in just moments ago.

After walking a few steps, she still didn’t feel at ease. She turned back to check. Mason was still standing where he was. His tall figure stretched long in the glow of the setting sun, as if he were watching her go.

That sight finally put her at ease. She waved at him enthusiastically.

The log cabin café sat right at a bend in the mountain path, with an amazing view.

When Amelia finally stood in front of its old wooden door, a rare sense of achievement washed over her.

She leaned against the doorframe, breathing hard, and proudly thought that this was way more fun than reaching the summit.

As soon as she stepped inside, warm air rushed toward her and chased away the cold clinging to her body.

So nice!

Amelia closed her eyes in happiness. She was just about to find a window seat and enjoy this hardearned moment of doing absolutely nothing when she turned aroundand her smile froze.

A familiar figure followed her in, calm and unhurried. Mason.

Amelia stood there, stunned, her mouth slightly open as she stared at him.

Yyou…” she said, still a little out of breath from both surprise and her fast walk. Why are you here too? Aren’t you going to keep climbing?

Mason didn’t answer right away.

His eyes swept around the café before settling on a couch by the window. It faced the distant snowcovered mountains and a frozen lake, with a perfect view.

He walked over and sat down, then looked at her, still standing there in shock.

Leaning back lazily, a hint of teasing flashed in his eyes as he spoke in a casual tone.

It’s not like I have to reach the top of every mountain.

Amelia stood at the door, staring at the man who had already made himself comfortable, not quite sure how to react.

What did that mean?

Did it mean he hadn’t followed her to keep an eye on her, but simply because he didn’t really feel like climbing either?

Her cheeks warmed again.

The bold farewell speech she had made earlier replayed in her head, making her feel embarrassed.

He had clearly seen through her little plan for a long time, but he said nothing and calmly went along with her oneperson show.

She ground her back teeth, a little annoyed. Amelia muttered under her breath, Then why didn’t you say anything earlier?

Mason seemed to hear her. He looked at her calmly and waved at her from across the room.

The café was warm and softly lit.

Books filled the shelves along the wall. Small groups of customers sat scattered in the corners, most of them couples leaning close and whispering to each other.

The whole place felt quiet and cozy, a sharp contrast to the cold, snowy world outside.

In this kind of atmosphere, even Mason’s simple gesture felt quietly intimate.

Amelia felt a little shy.

She pressed her lips together, pretended to stay calm, and slowly walked over.

She sat down a few inches away from him.

From this window seat, she could see the snowcovered mountains in the distance, glowing gold under the setting sun.

Closer by, the winding wooden trail was clearly visible. Tiny dark dots moved along it, like ants. Those were the hikers still climbing.

Amelia quickly found the perfect excuse to change the subject.

She forgot her embarrassment at once, leaned forward, and almost pressed herself against the window. Do you think we can see Lily and Tim from here?she said excitedly, pointing outside.

She widened her eyes, trying hard to spot familiar figures among the blurry crowd. She didn’t realize that her posture had already crossed the safe distance between them.
