His forceful, responsible words were like a calming anchor, instantly smoothing out all of Amelia’s anxiety.
She nodded hard in his arms, letting out a soft hum.
“Then… Mason,” Amelia murmured, still uncertain. She tilted her face up, trying to meet his eyes in the dim light. “Can we keep it quiet for a little longer? Just until I’m settled at work and have something to show for it. Then-”
He cut her off before she could finish.
“That’s fine.”
Mason’s voice dropped again, carrying a dangerous edge.
Amelia lit up, thinking he’d agreed.
“It’s fine unless you make it up to me,” he added slowly, his warm breath brushing her forehead.
Amelia froze.
She blinked, trying to process what he meant.
“Make it up to you?” she asked, confused. “How? You’re not a kid. Why do you need to be coaxed?”
Instantly, she felt his body stiffen.
Crap. She’d said the wrong thing again.
Mason let out a low, frustrated laugh at her unromantic reply.
This little blockhead is going to drive me crazy.
“Amelia Harlow,” he growled, grinding out her full name.
The next second, he lowered his head and captured her lips in a deep, demanding kiss.
He didn’t pull back until her knees weakened and she had to cling to his shoulders to stay upright. As he kissed her, he murmured, word by word, “A boyfriend who’s mad needs even more coaxing. Got it?”
Amelia nodded vaguely in his arms.

Her brain was still oxygen–deprived from that long, almost punishing kiss. She felt light- headed, thoughts tumbling apart.
She noticed he wasn’t quite as angry anymore–not totally calm, though.

Suddenly feeling brave, Amelia lifted her head. Following the outline of his jaw from memory, she clumsily pressed her lips to his.
This kiss was nothing like his dominant, forceful one.
It was light as a feather, careful.
“Like this?” She kissed him once and quickly pulled back, her breathing uneven as she asked softly, “Are you still mad?”
Mason let out a low chuckle.
“Not enough.”
Before Amelia could react, he bent again.
Now, they weren’t in some hotel room, but in his private, secure bedroom.
There was nothing left to hold back.

Gradually, the kiss began to spiral toward something uncontrollable.
Mason was no longer satisfied with just lips and tongues. He caught her rosy mouth and ground against it.
The hand that had been wrapped around her back grew restless. Through the thin fabric of her pajamas, it slid slowly downward, carrying a spark like electricity. It slipped under the hem, skimming over the smooth skin of her waist.
“Mm…”
The moment his warm, rough hand touched her cool skin, Amelia shivered.
A soft flush spread over her entire body.
She knew exactly what that meant.
All the things they’d held back before, because the timing wasn’t right, suddenly felt like they could happen tonight.
Her compliance was the clearest form of consent.

It gave Mason the most direct encouragement.
In the dim light, his eyes darkened with desire, stormy and intense.
