“And that exact detail exposed them. When my people were investigating the rental records of all suspicious vehicles, they followed the trail and uncovered Celia’s rental information. That’s how we ended up with the evidence you’re looking at now.”
After hearing Mason’s explanation, Ethan felt a wave of shame wash over him.
“Don’t worry,” he forced out through clenched teeth. “I won’t let them get away with this!”
But Mason didn’t respond immediately. He simply looked at Ethan with an amused expression.
After a moment, he spoke again. “Ethan, exactly who are you referring to when you say ‘them?”
Ethan froze for a second before answering instinctively. “Obviously, the people on my father’s side… Derek, Celia, and that Neville!”
Mason let out a scornful laugh.
“Ethan, you’re hopelessly naive.” Mason’s tone suddenly sharpened. “Have you never considered one question? When they tricked Amelia into getting into the car, they used my name.
“My relationship with Amelia hasn’t been made public in our circle. More importantly, very few people around me even know how far things between us have progressed.
“So tell me this–how could your father, a man who only recently clawed his way back into the Rowes’s core circle after years on the margins, know that information so precisely that he could set a trap?”
Ethan’s mind exploded.
That’s right!
No matter how resourceful Derek might be, there’s no way he can easily obtain information like that!
Unless…
Unless someone close to me leaked it to him.
Someone passed that information directly to Derek and Celia.
Ethan’s eyes widened.
The realization struck him almost instantly.
Mason had already laid everything out clearly, openly pointing out that there was a deeper betrayal
behind all of this.
Ethan felt as if his entire world had suddenly been overturned.
He should’ve continued flipping through the documents to uncover more of the truth.
Yet the stack of papers in his hands now felt as heavy as a thousand pounds.
