Hannah’s body jerked violently, and a sickly flush suddenly rose across her pale face as her eyes filled with wary suspicion.
“Ethan… w–why would you suddenly ask something like that?” She blinked in feigned confusion, trying to hide the turmoil inside with an innocent expression, but the rapid flicker of her pupils betrayed how nervous she really was.
His smile grew even colder. “Because someone told me something.
“They said Jack died because of you.”
“That’s complete nonsense! Who’s spreading lies about me behind my back?! How could Jack possibly have died because of me?” Her reaction was so extreme that she completely forgot Isla was still standing behind Ethan. Her hysterical outburst frightened the little girl into shrinking even closer behind him.
“The police report clearly states everything in black and white!” Hannah gasped for breath. “Jack’s company failed, and he couldn’t pay back the massive debts he owed, so he’d been hiding out for a long time. On Isla’s birthday, he finally came back home, but a speeding truck hit him and killed him! It was an accident! Ethan, why won’t you believe me?”
Ethan didn’t respond right away. He simply watched her agitated face in silence, and the final trace of trust in his eyes disappeared completely.
Because the file Mason had handed him had already laid bare every lie Hannah had told, along with the filthy secrets she had tried so hard to keep hidden.
It was true that Jack’s Boyd Enterprise had ended up drowning in debt due to poor management, but the real cause wasn’t Jack alone.
Jack had been desperate to satisfy Hannah’s endless appetite for luxury. To keep up with her demands, he’d diverted company funds and even borrowed from loan sharks, leaving the company’s finances riddled with bigger and bigger holes.
What was even more outrageous was that in his desperation, Jack had been introduced by a so–called friend to invest in a “high–return opportunity.”
That project turned out to be nothing more than a carefully crafted investment scam–the final straw that dragged him completely into the abyss, destroying Boyd Enterprise in the process.
And the friend who had lured Jack into that trap was actually one of Hannah’s lovers, someone she had already been involved with while Jack was still alive.
Using his relationship with Hannah, the man had skillfully extracted Jack’s business information and set up a flawless scheme that ultimately left Jack with nothing but crushing debt.
Jack’s death might have looked like a simple traffic accident on the surface, but the people pulling the strings behind it were closely tied to Hannah and her lover.
That also explained why the Boyds hated Hannah so fiercely that they were even willing to show up at her door using gangster tactics to demand Isla.

The deeper reason was that they had already seen through Hannah’s true nature.
The Boyds knew very well that if Jack’s only bloodline, Isla, continued living under Hannah’s influence, the child would inevitably grow up poisoned by her hypocrisy and selfishness.
Ethan’s breathing grew heavier, his chest feeling as though it were being scorched by burning flames.
The bone–deep chill he felt didn’t come only from Hannah’s cruelty–it also came from his own blind stupidity.
He remembered clearly how, after hearing the news of Jack’s death, Hannah had appeared in front of him with Isla, crying pitifully and claiming she had nowhere to turn while the Boyds were persecuting them.
Back then, he’d felt sorry for her. Remembering that Jack had once been his childhood friend, he’d reached out without hesitation to help them.
Not only had he sheltered Hannah and Isla, but he’d also used his influence and wealth to settle the trouble caused by the Boyds.
He had even taken them into his own home out of sympathy, constantly defending Hannah and Isla— actions that eventually destroyed his marriage with Amelia and led to their divorce after her heart completely broke.
“Yes, on the surface, that’s what they say caused Jack’s death.”
