Chapter 539 A Marriage Cracking at the Seams
Tim’s face stiffened. After a brief hesitation, he gave Dylan and Leigh an apologetic nod, then hurried after Lily. “Lily, slow down!”
That left only Amelia, Dylan, and Leigh in the office.
Leigh looked at Amelia in confusion. “What exactly is the relationship between Tim and Ms. Rayne?”
Secing the hurt and bewilderment on her face, Amelia felt a flicker of pity. But whatever history she and Tim had once shared was long over. After a moment’s consideration, she decided to tell the truth.
“They’re married.”
“What?”
Leigh’s expression changed at once. She stumbled back a step as if the news had struck her physically, then murmured to herself, “I can’t believe it… He’s already married…”
Tim had to jog to catch up with Lily by the elevator.
He grabbed her wrist, his voice heavy with restrained frustration. “Lily, why are you making a scene in public again? We’re working.”
The corridor was brightly lit, making Lily’s expression look even colder. She wrenched her hand free, turned to face him, and fixed him with a razor–sharp stare.
“Yes, we’re working. Too bad no one told me one of the partners in this deal would be such a very special Ms. Lennon.”
Her lips curled into a cold smile. “So tell me, Mr. Clem. What’s the real reason you were so eager to lock in this business trip? You knew your ex was back and deliberately brought me along, your inconvenient legal wife. Was it to put her in her place, or to stage some touching little reunion right in front of me?”
“What are you talking about?” Tim’s face darkened instantly.
Her accusations splashed filth over the shock and awkwardness he had felt at seeing someone from his past again, turning it into something ugly and deliberate.
He knew she had gotten the wrong idea and stepped forward at once, trying to explain. “You’ve got it all wrong. I had no idea Dylan was Leigh’s father. I met Leigh overseas, and after we broke up, we never spoke again. It’s been years. I didn’t even know when she came back!”
But to Lily, the explanation only made things worse.
“Oh? Years without contact?” she said with a sneer. “What a moving love story. After all that time apart, she still recognized you instantly and shyly announced your romantic history right in front of her father. Tim, that’s not some ordinary ex. That’s the one who never left your heart.”
“This is getting more ridiculous by the second.” A deep headache was already setting in.
He realized that no matter what he said, Lily would twist it into something even worse. Exhausted, he

rubbed his brow, his voice full of helplessness. “Lily, can you please be reasonable? If I were still hung up on her, if I really had some unforgettable woman in my heart, then why would I have married you in the first place?”
“Married me?” Lily shot back. “Have you forgotten how that marriage happened? We got married on impulse during a trip. A reckless spur–of–the–moment decision. Can you honestly say you loved me that deeply back then? You just thought it was exciting, something new. The truth is, both of us know a marriage like that was never built to last.”
Tim went still.
She was right. It had been a whirlwind marriage.
At the beginning, the thrill of doing something so unconventional had swept them both away. They thought they were perfect for each other, opposites who fit together effortlessly. Even after moving in together so quickly, the rush of being in love had seemed untouched.
But time flatters no one. It softens nothing for long.
Onge the first blaze of passion burned out, the grind of daily life exposed all the sharpest, ugliest edges of who they really were.
