Out in the hallway, the two women exchanged a look. In each other’s eyes, their resentment toward Amelia had just deepened.
After Phoebe stalked off, swallowing down a mouthful of bitterness, Mason turned around and shut his door with one clean motion.
He walked over to the bathroom, lifted a hand, and knocked lightly. His voice was threaded through with a smile he couldn’t quite suppress. “You can come out. She’s gone.”
The bathroom door cracked open, and Amelia poked her head out first–hair still damp, dark eyes darting from one side of the room to the other. Once she was satisfied the coast was clear, she stepped out unhurriedly.
She still carried the warmth and soft scent of her shower. Her pale skin was flushed a delicate pink from the
heat.
Before she could get a word in, Mason had already wrapped an arm around her and pulled her into him. His voice was laced with mock grievance. “Ms. Harlow, you really are impressively composed. A girl in a slip comes knocking on my door, and you just stand in there and listen for that long? Not even a reaction?”
Amelia burst into a small laugh at the wronged look on his face. She tipped her head back, her eyes dancing, and said without a hint of shame, “Wasn’t I just testing my dear Mason’s willpower?”
“Oh?” Mason arched a brow and gathered her closer, lowering his face until the tip of his nose almost brushed hers. “And the results of the test? Are you satisfied?”
His voice had gone low and rough,
. “arm in a dangerous way.
Amelia pressed a finger to his solid chest and shook her head with exaggerated seriousness. “Mmm… with a whole door between us, it’s hard to say for sure. Next time I’ll stand closer. Take a better look.”
“There’s going to be a next time?” Mason laughed despite himself, pushed to the edge by her sheer nerve. He let out a soft huff, leaned in, and gave her a tiny, retaliatory nip on the lip. “You’re really asking for it.”
Before the words had even finished leaving his mouth, he scooped her up in his arms and strode toward the wide bed in long
unhurried steps.
“Then tonight I’ll let you see everything. As close as you want.”
He laid her down gently on the soft sheets, his tall frame settling over her, wrapping her in his presence.
Amelia let out a startled sound. She’d pushed it one step too far, and she knew it.
Begging for mercy now was clearly far too late.
All she could do was press her hands flat against his chest and laugh, pleading with her eyes and her smile, natural charm in every flicker of expression.
Outside, the night deepened. Inside the room, the temperature kept climbing…
The next morning.
When Amelia opened her eyes, the space beside her had already gone cool.

There was a note on the nightstand, written in Mason’s bold, hurried handwriting: Urgent meeting at the office. Had to go.
She picked it up, tracing her fingertips over the ink pressed hard into the paper. A small, helpless smile tugged at her mouth.
That good mood didn’t last long.
By the time she’d finished getting ready and walked downstairs, polished and put together for the day, she was stopped in the living room by Wilda, who had clearly been waiting for her.
“Amelia. Stop right there.”
Wilda was seated in the main armchair, a rug over her lap. Her expression was even worse than the night before, and her eyes–sharp as blades–locked on Amelia at once.
Amelia’s step slowed. She turned calmly to face her. “Good morning, Wilda.”
“It is not a good morning,” Wilda cut her off coldly and lifted her chin, her voice hardening into an accusation. “Let me ask you something. Did you or did you not sleep in Mason’s room last night?”
