“You need to be clear about something. Everett Group runs formal recruitment every year. Even for internal personnel changes, there’s no need for me to personally review or approve anything as long as they follow procedure.
“So where exactly is this idea coming from?
“Unless you’re asking for Pedro to bypass every process and be directly parachuted into a critical executive role?”
Wilda’s pitiful, emotional expression froze mid–air.
Amelia, as if completely unaware of the rising tension, followed Mason’s lead and pressed on.
“Right, Wilda. What position do you want for Pedro? There should at least be a title. That way, we can see which department actually has a vacancy.”
Beatrice had been unable to get a word in the entire time.
Now, watching her boyfriend being sidelined–and seeing Wilda clearly losing ground–she bit her lip so hard her carefully applied gloss almost broke.
“What’s so hard to say?” Beatrice snapped, her tone sharp with grievance. “Amelia, didn’t you go straight into Stardale when you joined, and immediately become design director? You walked in as a senior executive. Pedro, at the very least, is Mason’s biological cousin and a true Everett. Are you saying he’s not even comparable to an outsider like you?”
To her, it was a perfect comparison. Yet, to Mason, it was almost laughable.
He glanced at her calmly.
“Stardale is a privately owned company fully funded by me, so all hiring decisions are mine alone.”
He paused, then shifted his gaze back to Wilda, his tone cooling further.
“Everett Group, on the other hand, is a publicly listed corporation. Every executive appointment requires nomination by the board and approval through a shareholder vote. It’s not something I, or any individual, can decide based on personal relationships.
“And more importantly, you were the one who set this rule back then, Grandma.”
Pedro’s expression darkened in an instant.
He had assumed that with Wilda backing him, landing a lucrative position in the company would be guaranteed. He never expected Mason to drag out the old rules and use them to shut everything down completely.
This move was a classic strike at the heart of the matter leaving him feeling as if he had fallen into an ice cellar. For a moment, he even thought that his plan to use this opportunity to infiltrate the Everett Group and chip away at Mason’s authority had already become nothing more than wishful thinking.
But just when everyone thought the matter was settled. Mason leaned back slightly. The cold edge around him softened–just barely–revealing something unreadable beneath.

“However, Grandma,” he continued, changing his tone. understand your concerns. Pedro is still my cousin, so I won’t ignore him completely.”
Wilda’s eyes brightened slightly. The tightness in her expression eased.
Pedro also snapped his head up, disbelief flickering across his face.
“If he’s willing to start at a management role in one of the regional subsidiaries and learn the ropes properly, I can have my assistant compile a list of available positions and assign him one immediately.”
“Subsidiary?” Beatrice’s face fell. She had fully expected Mason to compromise, but instead, this felt like exile.
