A few hours later, I was still thinking about everything.

I let out a slow breath, leaning back against the edge of the bed, fingers pressing lightly to my temples.

“You really handled that well,” Nova said.

I cracked one eye open. “Don’t start.”

“Oh, I’m not starting anything. I’m just saying.” Nova was on fire tonight. I could tell from her tone.

“I didn’t mean for it to go that way,” I muttered. “I just didn’t know what to say”

“Keep telling yourself that,” she said.

I exhaled, shutting my eyes again.

“I just needed time to think,” I said.

Nova didn’t say anything else.

I was silent too. Because she wasn’t wrong.

The answer had been sitting there the whole time. I just hadn’t wanted to say it out loud.

Nova shifted, her presence settling more firmly at the back of my mind.

“So what’s the plan?” Nova finally said.

I inhaled slowly, then let it out.

“I’m going to talk to him,” I said quietly.

I hesitated for a second.

Then nodded to myself.

“Tonight.”

Nova hummed softly.

“Well… move.” Nova’s voice echoed in my head.

I sighed and pushed myself up from the bed, smoothing my hands over my clothes.

I spotted Alexander from a distance.

He stood a few feet away from the main entrance, slightly turned toward Kyle, who was holding a tablet and pointing at something on the screen.

Kyle was talking. Something about patrol routes, I guessed.

Alexander nodded once, then said something I didn’t fully catch.

Then I walked toward them.

Kyle saw me first.

“Luna,” he greeted, straightening a little.

“Kyle,” I said, giving him a small smile.

Alexander glanced up at that.

He didn’t say anything at first. He just held my gaze for a brief moment, reading me the way he always did.

Then he looked back at Kyle.

“Give me a minute,” he said.

He dipped his head slightly to me before stepping away, already turning his attention back to whatever report he had been working on.

I folded my arms loosely, more to steady myself than anything else.

Alexander didn’t interrupt me.

“Then what do you mean?” he asked.

“And that’s a problem?” he asked.

A small silence settled between us again.

“Alexander, I didn’t say yes because I didn’t want to hurt you,” I said after a moment.

“I said yes because I do want this,” I continued. “I want you. I want us.”

“I’m not unsure about you,” I said. “I’m unsure about how big this is… and whether I’m ready to carry it the way it deserves.”
