By the time I finally finished the letter, I realized something important.
It was never going to sound perfect.

Better that way.
If I waited till morning, I might start overthinking it again.
And honestly-
I was tired of thinking.
A few seconds later, the bedroom door opened.
Alexander stepped inside quietly.
The moment his eyes landed on me, I saw surprise flicker briefly across his face.
It was probably because I was still awake.
At this hour, he definitely expected me to already be asleep.
His gaze moved over me carefully before he spoke.
“You’re still awake?”
His voice was calm.
Lower now from exhaustion.
I gave a small shrug.
“I couldn’t sleep,” I admitted.
Which wasn’t even remotely a lie.
Sleep felt impossible tonight.
“There was something important I needed to do,” I continued quietly. “So I figured I should just get
it done since sleeping clearly wasn’t happening anyway.”
Alexander’s eyes narrowed slightly in that thoughtful way he had whenever he was trying to read me without asking too many questions immediately.
Then his gaze dropped to the envelope in my hand.
I walked toward him slowly before holding it out.
He took it automatically, though confusion crossed his face almo..
“What’s this?”.
For a second, I just looked at the envelope in his hands.
Then I finally answered.
immediately.

“It’s a letter.”
My voice stayed surprisingly calm.
“I already signed it.”
Alexander’s eyes lifted back to mine immediately.
And I could practically see the realization beginning to form in his head before I even explained
further.
I swallowed once before continuing anyway.
“It’s for Silver Hollow,” I said softly.
The room felt quieter after that.
I kept speaking before either of us could sit too long inside the silence.
“If things go wrong in Stonevale… I began carefully, “if I don’t make it…”
Even saying the words aloud felt strange.
Not because I was afraid.
But because hearing them out loud made everything sound dangerously real.
I forced myself to continue anyway.
“The letter explains everything,” I said. “Or at least enough.”
Alexander still hadn’t said á word.
He was just looking at me now.
I looked away briefly before adding,
“I explained about the spell. About Stonevale. About why I’m going there.”
I paused.
Then finished softly,
“So Silver Hollow won’t immediately turn this into a war against Blood Crescent.”
That part mattered most.
More than my own fear.
More than my own family’s reaction.

Because I knew my pack.
And I knew what my death would mean politically.
I looked at him again.
“All you have to do is seal it,” I explained gently. “Then deliver it to Alpha Jason if…”
I didn’t finish the sentence.
I didn’t need to.
Alexander understood perfectly.
For a moment, he said nothing at all.
His fingers tightened slightly around the envelope.
Then loosened again.
I watched him open his mouth slightly like he was about to say something.
Maybe argue.
be tell me not to think like that.
Maybe tell me I wouldn’t die.
But then-
He stopped himself.
His jaw tightened faintly.
And slowly, he closed his mouth again without saying a word.
Something about that hurt more than if he had argued.
Because it meant he understood why I wrote it.
It meant some part of him had accepted the possibility too.
After a long second, he finally gave a small nod.
Just once.
Then he stepped closer to me.
Carefully.
Like he was handling something fragile, even though neither of us mentioned it aloud anymore.

I felt his hand rest briefly against the side of my head before he leaned down and pressed a soft kiss against my forehead.
It was gentle.
Lingering slightly longer than usual.
When he pulled back, his expression was still calm.
And without another word…
He turned quietly toward the door as if he intended to walk back outside again.
