My grip on the letter tightened slightly behind my back.

And I gave him a look that I hoped said I was completely innocent.

“Hi,” I said softly, almost sheepishly.

Then he spoke.

“I have questions,” he said calmly.

I smirked.

Of course he did.

“First,” he continued, still watching me, “shouldn’t you be resting in your room?”

I sighed lightly.

“And second,” he added, tilting his head slightly, “what exactly are you doing in the office?”

His eyes flicked toward the drawer I had just closed.

“And third,” he finished, voice a little more pointed now, “what were you looking for in my drawer?”

I stared at him for a second.

Then I rolled my eyes.

Very deliberately.

“I didn’t want to stay in the room,” I said simply.

Like that explained everything.

Because in my mind, it did.

I shifted my weight slightly, suddenly feeling less guilty and more stubborn.

“It’s too quiet,” I added.

Then I glanced at him again.

“And before you start interrogating me like I’ve committed a crime, I wasn’t stealing anything.”

His eyebrow lifted slightly.

I huffed.

“I just wanted my letter back, okay… I think it’s a little too embarrassing to be laying around.”

Yes. Now that I said it, I realized that was the real thing. Not curiosity.

I had poured too much emotion into the letter. I probably said some dumb things in there too.

As I said it, I brought my hand from behind my back and waved the letter lightly in the air like proof.

Nothing suspicious.

Just me retrieving my own property.

At least that was my logic.

Alexander’s expression changed instantly.

Then he moved.

One moment I was holding the letter up.

He had already turned away from me, walking casually toward his desk like nothing had just happened.

I stood there staring at him.

Then spoke over his shoulder.

“It’s under my custody,” he said evenly.

So I settled for staring at him instead.

“Oh,” I said flatly.

“I was thinking,” Alexander said.

“About what?” I asked.

He paused for a moment.

“You should visit home.”
