Chapter 583

FAYE

I nodded when Alexander suggested running me a warm bath.

Claim

I didn’t trust my voice enough to answer with anything more. I could take care of myself, but letting him think otherwise was the only way to avoid questions I wasn’t going to answer.

Without asking another question, he walked into the bathroom. A few seconds later, I heard the soft rush of water filling the bathtub, followed by the click of the water heater.

The room gradually filled with warmth, and I closed my eyes for a moment, grateful that he had stopped pressing me for answers.

If he had asked me one more question, I would have broken.

I wasn’t sure I had another lie left in me.

By the time Alexander returned to the bedroom, I had already changed out of my swimsuit. I had wrapped a large towel around myself, my damp hair falling loosely over my shoulders.

He looked at me for a moment before walking over.

“You don’t have to walk,” he said quietly.

Before I could protest, he bent down, slipped one arm beneath my knees and the other around my back, and lifted me into his arms.

Normally, I would have laughed and insisted that I was perfectly capable of walking a few metres to the bathroom myself.

Tonight…

I simply rested my head against his shoulder and let him carry me.

He lowered me carefully into the warm bath before climbing in beside me

Neither of us spoke. The silence between us wasn’t awkward. It was comforting. At least, it would have been if guilt hadn’t been eating at me.

The warm water eased some of the tension in my body, and for several minutes, I simply leaned back against his chest, allowing the heat to relax muscles I hadn’t realised were so tight.

Alexander stayed close without crowding me.

Every now and then, his hand would brush lightly over my arm or my shoulder as he washed away the lingering smell of chlorine from my

skin.

He never asked another question.

For that, I was grateful.

Because I honestly didn’t know how much longer I could keep looking him in the eye and pretend that all I had was a headache.

My mind wasn’t here.

It kept drifting back outside.

Back to Helen.

I could still see her sitting by the pool with that small handkerchief pressed against her lips.

I could still see the blood.

I could still hear her voice telling me she was dying with a calmness I couldn’t even begin to understand.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the blood running from her nose.

Every time I took a breath, I heard her saying she didn’t regret it.

That if she had to choose again… she would still save me.

A painful knot tightened inside my chest.

How was I supposed to live with that?

How was I supposed to carry the knowledge that someone had willingly traded their own life

for mine? I knew for a fact I didn’t deserve that kind of sacrifice from her.

I didn’t think my own mother would ever go that far for me.

And worse…

I was supposed to keep it from Alexander…

How could I? He deserved to know. He had every right to know. Helen was his mother.

If our positions had been reversed, I couldn’t imagine him hiding something like this from me I wouldn’t even forgive him if I found out.

Yet…

I had promised her. She wanted to tell her children herself. She wanted to choose the moment.

She wanted one last chance to be their mother instead of becoming someone they pitied every time they looked at her.

I understood that. I tried to see reason with her.

I truly did.

And because of that I couldn’t bring myself to betray her trust.
