After Yates hung up, the audio feed went quiet for a moment, punctuated only by the faint rustling of clothes.
It seemed Lynn Wallace was on her way, and Yates and Jacqueline Wallace could no longer continue their tryst.
Janina and the others could see everything on their phones.
Yates twisted the cap off a water bottle and held it to Nolan Holt's lips.
Nolan, still playing his part, managed to swallow a mouthful.
Once he was done, Yates tossed Nolan back onto the sofa and wrapped an arm around Jacqueline's slender waist. She pushed him away.
Her body was a furnace; she couldn't touch a man right now without getting burned.
Seeing Jacqueline pull away, Yates, who had found his satisfaction in three seconds didn't press the issue. He loosened his tie and sank onto the sofa.
Jacqueline glanced at Nolan, fighting the urge to let her eyes linger on him.
If Yates weren't here, she would have forced herself on Nolan without a second thought.
"When are you going to deal with Melody Leigh?" Jacqueline asked.
Yates lit a cigarette, took a long drag, and answered lazily.
"What? Jealous? That fool is already wrapped around my finger. In less than a month, I'll have every penny she owns."
"Then she and that idiot Nolan can become gambling addicts together, and we'll be home free. With Ms. Wallace helping us, even if they figure out they've been conned, there's nothing they can do."
Janina looked over at Melody, whose face was deadly pale.
It was clear now that Yates and Jacqueline's scheme was about more than just toying with Melody and Nolan's emotions.
Lynn was a key player in all of this. Realizing this, Janina took out her phone and made a call.
A storm raged in Nolan's mind as he heard Yates's words. So, the person he had been chatting with online all these years was Yates, not Jacqueline.
Damn it all. Not only had his feelings been manipulated for years, but now they were plotting to destroy him completely.
Nolan was trapped, unable to react.
He had to continue playing dead while listening to their sinister plans.
He screamed internally, a silent, frustrated howl of absurdity. "This is my life now? Seriously?"
He wanted to cry but couldn't.
Who could possibly understand how broken he felt at that moment?
Jacqueline, now fully dressed, sat across from Yates. A shadow of melancholy crossed her face, perhaps from her earlier unfulfilled desires. She looked at Yates and spoke.
