Easton didn't want to complain about his hardships in front of Janina. The family didn't have the extra money to lease land, and he couldn't afford the risk of a loss.
He clasped his hands together, speaking a bit nervously. "I don't have that kind of ability. If I can just manage our own few acres well, we won't go hungry. We can sell the extra grain and vegetables for a little cash."
Janina saw right through Easton's worries. He was careful and organized; even after their parents' devastating accident, he had kept the household running flawlessly.
Instead of responding to Easton's point, Janina laid out her idea directly. "Easton, why don't you give it a try? Don't worry about the money; I'll provide it. I've been looking for an investment, and I think growing vegetables is a good one."
"As for sales channels, you don't need to worry at all. As long as the vegetables are fresh and safe, there will be buyers. People are very particular these days and are willing to pay extra for truly fresh, farm-to-table produce. We can market it as organic, rural-sourced food. The only condition is that we use minimal pesticides and absolutely no hormones."
Hearing Janina's plan, Easton began to waver, but he didn't want to take her money. He knew she was only saying she wanted to invest to solve his funding problem. Leasing enough land to grow vegetables would require at least twenty or thirty thousand dollars upfront, a sum they absolutely didn't have. Janina had just gotten divorced, was pregnant, and wasn't working. Where would she get that kind of money?
"Nina, I think we should forget it…"
Janina knew what Easton was about to say and cut him off with a smile. "Easton, my ex-husband gave me a large settlement when we divorced. Instead of letting it sit in the bank, I'd rather invest it. I'll hire you as the manager. If we lose money, it's on me. If we make a profit, we split it fifty-fifty. What do you think?"
Her words completely erased Easton's hesitation. He waved his hands and said, "I can manage it for you, of course, but how could I take a share of the profits?"
