Melody frowned, just as angry.
"He's a lost cause. Three years ago, Nina was the one who paid for his hemorrhoid surgery. He'd been working for over a decade and couldn't even scrape together a few hundred dollars for an operation. I knew then that there was no hope for him."
Melody's words brought the memory back to Janina clearly. It had been shortly after she and Julius got married.
One day, Wendy sent a message to their group chat, asking to borrow two thousand dollars.
Janina had money at the time and immediately transferred Wendy six thousand. But Wendy only accepted two, explaining that her brother Baron needed hemorrhoid surgery and couldn't afford it.
Wendy had to make her monthly loan payments to the bank, so she had no extra money for Baron's operation.
A person like that acts recklessly because he knows his parents and sister will always be there to catch him. He has no reason to worry.
Janina ate a piece of beef and asked, "How much does he actually owe, besides the mortgage?"
If it was just the missed mortgage payments, there was still a chance. They could negotiate with the bank, pay back the year of missed payments, and change the account for automatic withdrawals.
That way, the money wouldn't go through Baron's account anymore. At least they could save the house and avoid a bigger loss. An auction by the court would fetch a much lower price than a private sale.
Wendy sighed and ate some food. She hadn't had a proper meal in over ten days.
"We don't know yet. Baron's gone off the grid. He's not answering his phone or replying to messages. This weekend, I'm going to Portsborough to bring him back."
If he didn't show up, the court would go after their parents. If they really foreclosed on the house…
Baron couldn't hide forever. He had to take responsibility for his mistakes.
It was her mother. The moment Wendy answered, she heard Mrs. Clifford's sobbing through the receiver.
"Wendy, I don't want to live anymore. That animal Baron… The debt collectors are calling, telling us to pay his debts. What are we supposed to do?" Mrs. Clifford cried, gasping for breath.
The love she once felt for her son had turned into an equal measure of hatred.
He had torn their perfectly good family apart.
Wendy felt a surge of irritation. Instead of answering, she asked, "Mom, have you been able to contact Baron? He needs to come back to Clayborne City and handle this himself. And how much does he owe on those online loans?"
Mrs. Clifford choked back a sob, her voice weak and powerless.
"Wendy, I'm afraid to contact him. Let's you and I figure out what to do first. Your father still doesn't know. He has high blood pressure, and I'm worried the shock will be too much for him. Besides, we need him to keep earning money. And Baron… please don't go looking for him yet. You know his health is delicate. He can't handle the stress."
