Abigail was unhappy. Even though she admitted West was a good catch—handsome, now a business owner, wealthy, and a good match for her daughter—she couldn't ignore the current situation. Most importantly, he had treated Marjorie exceptionally well, never wanting her to suffer. By all accounts, he was the ideal husband many women dreamed of. But she had already burned her bridges with Grace and Ethan. How could she possibly face them to propose a marriage alliance again?

Grace would never agree.

At that thought, Abigail's voice turned stern and cold. "Don't think I'm just being negative, but we've completely fallen out with the Holts. There's no way Grace will let you marry into that family. You need to give up on that idea. I think Clark is a much better fit for you than West."

Marjorie grew impatient. It was her mother's fault for being so aggressive and humiliating the Holts in the first place. If their families were still on good terms, things wouldn't be this bad.

"Mom, look at Clark! All he does is eat and sleep. He doesn't lift a finger. He expects you to wait on him hand and foot, even doing his laundry like a maid. If I marry someone like that, I can't imagine what my life will be like."

But Abigail disagreed with her daughter's assessment. Sure, Clark was a bit lazy, but what man wasn't at first? He just needed a woman to train him.

"Stop being so indecisive. Clark's family background is excellent. After you get married, you can just hire a maid. You won't have to worry about chores. What wealthy person does their own housework? West is nice, but you missed your chance."

"Besides," she added, "look at the Holt family's situation. With seven siblings, there’s bound to be endless family drama. Clark is an only child. You two can move out and won't have to live with his parents. That's a much better situation than West's."

Hearing her mother constantly belittle the Holts made Marjorie's blood boil. She was only with Clark for his money. Before they lived together, she found him tolerable. But now, after spending some time with him, she had discovered his many disgusting habits.

"Does West even talk to you? You were so cold to him, breaking up and then getting with Clark just days later. Any man would assume you were already with Clark behind his back. Do you think West doesn't know that? He'll never forgive you. Just give up."

Abigail glanced at her daughter, knowing her words were harsh. But if she didn't say it bluntly, Marjorie would never let go.

"Mom, how can you say that about me? Do you think I wanted to break up with him? You were the one who looked down on the Holts from the beginning, always whispering in my ear about how West wasn't good enough in this way or that. I had no choice but to leave him. If you hadn't started a feud with his family, West and I wouldn't be in this situation today."
