Thad leaned back against the sofa, his expression deep and thoughtful. He took a drag from his cigar before speaking. "I'm not sure. But just in case, have someone follow them."
Thad waved a hand, and the two bodyguards stepped forward. "Your orders, Thad?"
"Follow those two women."
"Yes, sir."
...
After leaving the club, Wendy realized they were being followed.
Playing up her drunken state, Maggie called Janina and told her they should all leave separately.
To make the act convincing, Wendy hailed a ride-share once they were outside and helped Maggie into the car.
The car behind them stayed on their tail, and Wendy didn't dare relax.
To be honest, she was terrified. When she had burst into that room, she had felt an intensely cold aura from the man on the sofa.
Maggie patted her hand reassuringly.
The car dropped them off at Maggie's apartment complex.
Wendy supported Maggie as they got out and went inside.
The men following them couldn't get past the security gate without a key card. They waited until the women were out of sight before finally driving away.
Wendy was still trembling with fear. "Are they gone?"
Maggie straightened up, her act completely gone. She put a comforting arm around Wendy's shoulder. "They're gone. You're sleeping at my place tonight."
Wendy nodded, still shaken. "Okay. I wouldn't dare go home right now anyway. What if they're waiting for me outside?"
Worried for her friends, Janina warned her, "You need to be careful. The fact that they followed you means whatever's in that suitcase is serious. They're afraid you saw something you shouldn't have."
"Don't worry, I can handle myself."
Suddenly, Maggie remembered the tattoo on Thad's chest and brought up an old story.
"I recognized the tattoo on that man's chest. Do you remember that story I told you about my friend from middle school who was kidnapped?"
"Of course," Janina replied without hesitation. "You said your friend was kidnapped but managed to escape because she was smart. But then she had bad luck and was diagnosed with lung cancer and died not long after."
Janina remembered the story clearly. Maggie had been heartbroken for a long time. That friend had been her best friend in middle school, but fate had been cruel.
Janina didn't understand what this had to do with tonight.
"Maggie, what does Thad's tattoo have to do with your friend?" she asked.
