The attending physician's expression turned serious.
Just as Janina thought he was about to suggest a new treatment plan, he said, "Lift up your shirt so I can examine you."
Janina froze. She was supposed to bare herself in front of a group of interns? Just put her chest on display for all of them?
Well…
They were doctors, yes, but she wasn't much older than these students, and at least half of them were men. Janina's eyes scanned the dozen or so interns.
During normal rounds, the attending physician would usually just take a quick look, followed only by nurses, which she didn't mind. But now, facing so many interns, her cheeks flushed with shame.
Oh God, she just wanted to sink through the floor.
"Doctor, nothing has changed. Can we maybe skip the examination?" she asked hesitantly.
The attending physician put his hands behind his back, seemingly sensing her discomfort. He gave a slight smile. "Of course we have to examine you. How else will I know your condition? Besides, your case is unusual. I brought them here specifically to learn from it."
Janina was speechless. So that was it. She was a teaching prop now.
Defeated, she slowly and reluctantly lifted one side of her top.
The doctor explained the situation to the interns, who diligently took notes in their notebooks, treating her like a specimen under a microscope.
When the examination was finally over, the group filed out of the room. Janina quickly pulled the blanket up to her chin, feeling a fresh wave of embarrassment and shame wash over her at the thought of how many people had just seen her.
She sighed, perhaps feeling sorry for someone so young to be afflicted with such an illness. "I'll wait two more days," Janina said absently. "If it doesn't get better, I'm transferring."
Her thoughts drifted to Liam and Joy. They were so small. If she really had some strange disease, what would happen to them? For the first time, she felt completely helpless.
The two women sharing her ward both had breast cancer and had undergone mastectomies. Cancer meant chemo, and she'd watched what they went through—hair falling out, the brutal bouts of vomiting.
The woman pointed to another bed, her tone suddenly somber.
"Before you arrived, a twelve-year-old girl was in that bed. She also had a problem with her breast, a hard lump inside. The doctors couldn't figure out what it was. Such a tragedy."
The woman's face was etched with sadness. Shocked that someone that young could have a problem with her breast, Janina asked, "What happened to her in the end?"
