Janina stared at him, then suddenly let out a cold laugh, her tone chilling.
"Julius, you're nothing more than a failed ex-husband. What right do you have to point fingers and tell me what to do? You want me to quit just to pave the way for Yvonne."
Her eyes were filled with scorn, her gaze frighteningly cold as she enunciated every word:
"In my mind, you have no right to even mention the children. Our relationship is less than that of strangers. Where do you get the nerve to speak to me like this?"
Julius's heart felt as if it were being squeezed by a giant hand, the pain making it hard to breathe.
His voice was strangled. "Janina..."
"It's not what you think. Do we really have to be like this? I... I just don't want you to be embarrassed, and I don't want to see you suffer..."
Even Julius himself wasn't sure when his perception of Janina had changed, but now he was terrified of her avoiding him.
Janina's expression was terrifyingly calm.
"Trying to make me Yvonne's stepping stone... Julius, the biggest mistake I ever made in my life was meeting you and marrying you. We're divorced now, so why are you still trying to drag me through the mud? What cardinal sin did I commit that you must treat me this way?"
As she spoke, her face was a mask of ice, devoid of any other emotion. She truly hated this selfish, hypocritical man.
Her words made Julius's heart tremble.
"It's not like that. You've misunderstood. How could I ever wish you ill? I'm just helping you choose a lifestyle that's best for you."
Provoked, Julius reverted to his old, stern demeanor.
Julius really was a dog, Janina thought, making himself sound so noble.
Pah!
You'll choose for me?
Who the hell do you think you are!
