Frustrated, Fairchild went downstairs again and did another sweep of the living room. He checked every corner, knowing that if there was a poison, there had to be a residue he could find. But after searching twice, he still came up empty.
He felt a pang of defeat. He couldn’t find a single thing.
Exhausted, he eventually gave up, lay down on the living room floor, and fell asleep.
Meanwhile, Janina went back to the children's room and began meticulously checking all their clothes and belongings.
When Fairchild woke up, he was greeted by the fragrant aroma of food on the table. He scrambled up from the floor, washed his hands in the restroom, and quickly sat down at the table, ready to eat.
Just then, West, Natalie, and Wendy arrived home.
Janina had already explained the situation in their family group chat, so everyone tacitly agreed to treat Fairchild as a normal guest. No one mentioned a word about Liam and Joy being sick.
After dinner, Fairchild pulled West aside, telling him he wanted to come to his restaurant for a feast the next day. He then counted off his favorite dishes on his fingers, telling West to prepare them in advance.
The nerve-wracking day finally came to a close.
Lying in bed that night, Janina tossed and turned, unable to sleep.
Just then, a message from Wendy popped up on her phone.
[You up? Come to my room.]
Janina got out of bed, opened her door, and peeked into the living room. It was pitch black downstairs. Land slept in a room on the first floor, and no light was coming from under her door. She must have been asleep.
Janina reconsidered, realizing that would be too obvious and might tip them off. She propped her head up with one hand.
“Something is wrong with Land, but we have no proof, so I can’t go to the police. I’ll stay here and act as bait to lure out the person behind this.”
Wendy instantly grew tense. “Absolutely not! That’s too dangerous. I say we just have the police arrest Land, or at least fire her. That would minimize the risk.”
Janina shook her head. “Without evidence, the police can’t arrest her. Firing her is an option, but the person behind this hasn’t achieved their goal. They’ll just find another way to harm me. Now that we know Land is involved, it will be much easier to draw out the mastermind.”
After hearing Janina’s reasoning, Wendy agreed it was a viable plan. She leaned closer to Janina. “So, what are you going to do?”
“Tomorrow, I’m going to install cameras in the house—in the kitchen, Land’s room, the areas where the kids usually play, and even my own bedroom. With the children gone to the countryside, the immediate danger is gone. But I’ll still be here. If she wants to target me, she’ll have to make a move again.”
