With the recent Yvonne incident, Janina had been too preoccupied to pay attention to what was going on between Wendy and West.

Today's get-together, with West at home, was the perfect opportunity. So, Janina, Maggie, and Melody had conspired to test the waters.

If they were interested in each other, great. If not, they would drop it. They wouldn't let either of them know, to avoid any awkwardness.

Melody was rinsing peppers under the faucet and turned to ask Wendy, “Do I need to take the seeds out of these?”

Wendy, who was cleaning a large scallion, glanced at the peppers in Melody's hand and said,

“You have to. They'll be deadly hot otherwise. But don't use your bare hands, or your skin will burn later. Just put them aside; I'll handle it.”

Maggie pulled Melody away with a look of feigned annoyance.

“Come on, we're just getting in the way. Look at you, you've splashed water all over the floor. Let's go arrange the appetizers instead.”

Taking Maggie's cue, Melody immediately understood, dropped what she was doing, and wiped her hands.

“Right, we'll go set out the appetizers. Wendy, you can deal with the peppers later.”

Wendy waved them away dismissively. “Go on, go on. If you hurt your hands, I'll just be the one to bandage you up.”

After Maggie and Melody left, the kitchen, now feeling much emptier, was filled with a slightly awkward atmosphere.

However, both of them kept the awkwardness to themselves, neither letting it show.

To break the silence, West initiated a conversation.

“Just leave the peppers over there, I'll take care of them. Could you help wash the scallions?” he said while rinsing some beef.

He couldn't think of anything better to say, so he just improvised.

Lately, although they worked together every day, Wendy had stopped letting him pick her up after work, saying she had to work late. But he knew she wasn't really working overtime; she was deliberately avoiding him and taking the subway instead.

It wasn't until she finished slicing and asked with her back to him, “All done. What else needs cutting?”

West turned his head, snapping out of his trance. “The eggplant needs to be washed.”

He had wanted to say, “That's enough. Go hang out with the others. I can handle it from here.” But the words changed as they left his mouth.

Selfishly, he didn't want Wendy to leave.

“Okay. After the eggplant, I'll peel some garlic.”

Wendy didn't notice West's expression and continued with her tasks.

After washing the eggplant, Wendy took two heads of garlic from the basket, placed them on the cutting board, smacked them with the flat of her knife, and easily peeled away the outer skin, revealing the white cloves.
