After all, at the time, Grace's family was reasonably well-off.
This way, Genevieve's own daughter would grow up in comfort under Grace's care, while she could torment Grace's child.
It was a win-win in her twisted mind. The two families went home with the wrong babies.
Genevieve brought Janina home, but she couldn't stand the thought of Grace's daughter having any connection to the Gable family. So she conspired with a mystic, putting on a show for the Gable family elders.
The mystic claimed that Janina's destiny was ill-fated and she should not carry the Gable surname. Among other options, he chose a different one for her. From then on, she was known by that name.
Genevieve sent Janina to be raised in the countryside, only bringing her back to the Gable household when she was fourteen.
When Janina found out the truth, she finally understood why she had never been loved in the Gable family. She wanted to find her real parents and tell them what had happened.
But when she went to the Holt family's address in Clayborne City, the staff there told her no one named Ethan lived there.
Her search came to an abrupt end.
Her phone continued to ring. Janina had no desire to answer. She knew exactly what Genevieve wanted: to leverage her connection to the Aurelius family for a business partnership.
Now that she and Julius were divorced, she couldn't help them. And even if she could, she wouldn't.
Janina decisively rejected the call.
Less than ten seconds later, a call came in from Cedric.
With a sigh, Janina answered, putting the phone on speaker and setting it down.
"Janina, why didn't you answer my call? Huh? You think you've grown wings now?" Genevieve's furious voice screeched from the phone.
When Janina didn't pick up, Genevieve had grabbed Cedric's phone. The moment the call connected, she couldn't stop herself from lashing out.
"If you have something to say, say it," Janina replied coolly, ignoring her tantrum.
Genevieve reined in her anger. Remembering what she needed to discuss, she softened her tone.
Everyone in The Graces' Chat knew Janina's secrets. They were completely open with each other, so Maggie was well aware of her situation.
"I know. I'm an adult now. They can't control me. If my birth parents aren't bad people, I'll accept them. If they are, I'll just pretend I don't have any."
"Exactly. And if you don't have them, you have the three of us," Maggie said with a reassuring smile.
Half an hour later, they arrived at the Gable estate.
This was a family matter, so Maggie knew better than to get involved. Before leaving, she told Janina to call if she needed anything.
Janina nodded. She knew Maggie was worried about her.
As Janina walked toward the front door, she could hear Genevieve's voice from inside.
"Oh, honey, how could we have taken the wrong baby? No wonder I never liked Janina. That mystic was right—she's a jinx, brought here to curse our family."
