Three days later, Janina accepted Ava's invitation to attend a charity gala hosted by the Nova Group.

It had been three years since she'd last attended a formal event; she had almost forgotten who she was. No matter what, she had to pick out a proper gown.

After a simple breakfast, Janina went to the mall with Maggie, Melody, and Wendy.

They shopped until noon, but Janina still hadn't found a dress she liked.

Melody suggested they could rent one, but she warned that it was hard for anyone without connections to get their hands on a good gown.

Janina considered it. Renting would be cheaper, and she'd only be wearing it for a few hours anyway.

They went to a large department store and chose a restaurant inside. Before they could even sit down, Janina spotted a woman coming down the escalator from the second floor.

She was slightly surprised at first, but as the woman drew closer, she called out, "Summer Quinn? It really is you! I thought I was mistaken."

Her three friends looked over. The woman was about their age, bundled up in a long down jacket. Her face was pale with a sallow undertone, the very picture of ill health.

Summer was clearly startled to see Janina. "Janina, it's you."

"You're back in the country? When did you get back?"

Janina had already noticed something wasn't right with her complexion, but asking directly felt rude.

"Oh, I've been back for a little while," Summer said with a faint smile. "I have to run. You girls go on ahead."

With that, Summer hurried away with her things.

"Who was that?" Melody asked curiously. They knew most of Janina's friends, but they had never seen this woman before.

"A girl I met when I first moved in with the Gable family. I think I mentioned her to you—Summer. She was absolutely beautiful," Janina said, her mind still replaying the image of Summer she'd just seen.

It was only November, yet Summer was wrapped in a long down coat, completely bundled up.

Was she sick?

"Oh, I remember now! You said she was the most beautiful girl you'd ever seen," Wendy recalled. Janina had indeed mentioned Summer before.
