Author’s pov
The tension in the room shifted instantly.
Members of the Cole family exchanged uneasy looks, their expressions darkening with every word out of Maggie’s mouth.
The Lawsons sat stiff and silent, their backs straight, faces tight.
Alpha Sebastian stayed still, his expression unreadable, every line of his face calm. Beside him, Cecilia remained quiet, choosing not to respond to Maggie’s accusations.
Most people in the room shared the Cole patriarch’s doubt, but curiosity flickered through the crowd.
[ Why bring Daisy into this at all ? ]
Even in Colorado Springs’s close-knit elite circle, no one mentioned a name like that for no reason. Everyone knew the local gossip was rarely made up out of nothing.
“Cecilia and Daisy are cousins, right ? “someone whispered, the words carrying in the strained silence.
Daisy’s mother straightened her shoulders before anyone else could answer. Her voice was steady but tight. “My daughter couldn’t attend because her child has been sick. She’s home taking care of him. That’s all there is to it. ”
Maggie tilted her head, her tone dripping with false sympathy. “That’s not true. She’s not home with a sick child. She’s missing. ”
The word hit like a slap. Murmurs rippled across the room as people turned toward each other, alarm spreading fast.
Missing ?
That wasn’t gossip. That was a bombshell.
Seeing that no one, not even Cecilia or Sebastian, spoke up to deny it and that both the Lawson and Black families stayed silent, Maggie took the chance to push further.
“Daisy’s been missing for days, “she said, her voice trembling just enough to sound sincere. “And what’s truly heartbreaking is that the Lawsons have kept it a secret. They’ve deceived the Cole family and made no effort to find who’s responsible. ”
Her gaze sharpened, her tone turning colder. “And why ? Because the Lawsons never really accepted Daisy as part of their family. ”
Maggie’s manipulation was almost perfect.
She told her story in a way that sounded serious enough to need an answer and personal enough to make any denial seem suspicious.
The color drained from the faces of both the Cole and Lawson families.
Scarlett Lawson pushed back her chair, anger flashing in her eyes. “You… ”
Luna Regina caught her wrist, giving a small shake of her head, silently warning her to stay calm. Across the room, the Locke relatives watched with thinly veiled amusement, like spectators at a ringside match.
The silence from the Lawsons and the Blacks, especially from Cecilia who had been so outspoken moments ago, made the crowd uneasy.
People started whispering again, thinking maybe Maggie was telling the truth.
“Julian, “the Cole patriarch said suddenly, his voice cutting through the noise. “Explain. ”
Julian’s face stayed composed, though his eyes had gone cold. “It’s true Daisy isn’t home, “he said evenly. “But she’s not missing. She called me. Her father ran into some trouble overseas, and she went to help him handle it. ”
The Cole patriarch’s anger eased a little at the explanation since it sounded reasonable.
But before the tension could fade, Maggie spoke again, hitting where it hurt most.
“Still lying ? “she snapped, a sharp edge sneaking into her voice. “You don’t even know where your own wife is ? ”
Julian’s expression hardened, his tone dropping to ice. “How would you know anything about my family ? Have you been spying on us ? ”
Maggie didn’t stop there.
“You can check the loan whenever you like, “she said lightly. “But what matters is what happened afterward. Daisy and I became close. She trusted me with things she didn’t tell anyone else. ”
She leaned forward, lowering her voice as if she were sharing a secret. “A week ago, Cecilia went to the Lawson estate with Alpha Sebastian. That night, Daisy’s little girl suddenly got sick.
Daisy told me she saw Cecilia scare the child on purpose with a fruit knife. That’s what made her ill. ”
Maggie’s voice softened, carefully measured. “The next evening, I called to ask how the child was. Daisy answered, crying so hard I could barely understand her.
She said Cecilia had gone missing, that Alpha Sebastian was furious. She mentioned needing to go out, and then the call cut off.
I tried calling again and again, but she never picked up. ”
Gasps spread around the room. Maggie paused just long enough before continuing, her tone full of false sorrow.
“The next day, a servant from the Lawson household told me that Cecilia had disappeared from the estate that night.
Daisy left her sick daughter to look for her, and Alpha Sebastian went after her as well. Later, he came back with Cecilia, but Daisy never returned. ”
Maggie paused, letting the silence stretch before she spoke again. Her eyes swept the room, shining with false sympathy. “The servant also said Daisy was the only family member at home during that time.
I thought that once Julian returned, he would ask where his wife was. But imagine my surprise when the entire Lawson family acted as if she had never existed. She has been gone for days now. ”
Whispers broke out across the room. The Cole family sat frozen, disbelief written across their faces.
Even the Locke relatives, who had been watching the drama like an evening show, now looked genuinely unsettled.
The accusation had gone far beyond gossip. It was personal, dangerous, and public.
