Chapter 119

There was nothing worse than watching my father lying motionless on the ground before slowly getting buried by my friends. It’s as if my heart was getting ripped out of my chest, watching the earth swallow him until finally he wasn’t there anymore. I would miss his laugh, his smile, the way he spoke to me in his calm voice like nothing was ever too bad if he was there. I remember how confused yet happy he was when we finally got to talk through the phone when Sebastian first had it fixed for us and the food. He was so amazed at the food, the fluffy blankets and the confusing number of couches that Sebastian forcefully fit into our small house. I miss him. I will miss him every day.

And I know he’s not related to me by blood and that I should be mourning my parents, that the city pack killed, but those were just names to me. This man is my father and he is the only one who I will ever consider as my father.

He saved me.

When I was three and now.

I wanted to scream and cry and kick and scream again, but there was a numbness to me now. The pain was ever present but my body did not react to it as I wanted to. Maybe the Gods are taking pity on me, on us. We’ve lost so much.

Every single one of us.

As much as I wanted to stay there, to curl up beside his grave and never leave, I know I couldn’t let myself do that. He wouldn’t want that. He would want us to do better.

So we do.

The five of us buried our dead. Andrew said his quiet goodbyes to his parents. He tells us they weren’t any better. They were rich and blind with power, wanting more and more, but they were still his parents. They thought they were doing the right thing for him by offering Andrew as Beta. They didn’t know what was happening behind closed doors when he was alone with the Alpha and his daughter. Kelcey buried her entire family… all her brothers, her mother and her father, bodies thrown into the river to rot and decay. We all fished them out and tried our best to bury what was left of them. We cried and lay everyone to rest, even sending quiet prayers for Sebastian’s family and to Benedict’s- his father, not his mother.

We didn’t know them but we all said our goodbyes anyway.

Because it felt right.

Because it was time to close this part of our life and continue to the next. It was sad as we realized that all of us had lost everyone in our lives, leaving only each other. It was truly sad, but it was also comforting and as we all made peace with this, we began moving.

While the world celebrated, we kept on.

We were like bullet trains, steaming past everything and everyone. The few days that followed, the five of us began cleaning up what remained of the city pack with Sebastian, Benedict and Andrew killing all who they deemed loyal to the city Alpha or the ones that had caused too much pain to be given a chance at redemption. We hunted for them, knowing they were in hiding and we scoured the lands, traveling for days and then weeks, seeing the world to find these runaways.

“What do we do with the ones we think deserve a second chance?” Benedict asked, referring to the teenage boy he had stood over earlier that day. The boy cowered before him, shaking from head to toe, having been found after hiding in one of the ruined farm lands that was abandoned. The boy was from the city pack, one of the boys in training to be a guard. Andrew was the one that identified him, mentioning what he knew of the teenager. He acted as our source for all information regarding the city pack.

“Send them to the farm pack.” I find myself saying, talking over the men. “He hasn’t done much but he was still in the fight and he should help with the rehabilitation of the farm lands. After that we’ll see what’s next for him.”

And what of the prisoners” Kelcey inquires, remembering that most of the city pack population were survivors that were made into slaves. The so called ‘helpers that the city pack kept alive but have no family to come back to

There were so many of them too. The ones that we saved when they were used as living shields. “It’s their choice. They may join the farm packs or join the nameless pack-

“It’s the mountain pack now.” Benedict corrected with a smile. “We’re no longer nameless.”

I find myself smiling as well. “Sorry, they may join the mountain pack with the rest of the survivors or when the dust settles, they can live in what remains of the city pack. Some of these people have been born in the city or have worked so long in the city that they know nothing else. We destroyed the city pack but not its entirety. Maybe they can make a home for

themselves there.”

“Without an Alpha? Who would take care of them?” Andrew questioned, genuinely worried. “The last few days we’ve caught so many rogues trying to steal from the wreckage. Not to mention the scouts that these other packs have sent to check if we’re still guarding the area.”

Benedict nodded along with him. “The city pack has a lot of enemies and their wealth is famous. Soon, when the others realize our attention is elsewhere, there will be a new war and it will be about who will get the land and the riches buried under all the rumble.”

I have heard the way the other packs started to sniff around, to stir their attention towards the massive wealth that the city park left. They were all in my name, being the heir to the city pack and everyone was nice enough not to mention it.
