ale kind of relief settled in my chest, but I didn’t let myself fully fall into it yet.

One of his hand slid from my face to my waist, holding me close.
“But Rhys…” he added, his jaw tightening slightly. “He’s my brother. I can’t just walk away and leave him in something like that without making sure he’s ready.”
Of course.
He felt responsible for his younger brother and that was a part of him I had never wanted to take away.
I nodded slowly.
He exhaled, like he was letting something go.
“I’ll let him take over,” he said. “I’ll support him. But I’m not staying in it. I want no part of that life.”
My throat felt tight with emotion as the tension I’d been holding finally broke, something warm and overwhelming spreading through my chest.
“You’re right, wife,” he went on. “We’ll go to my old home in Italy. You, me, Lila… and the baby.”
I blinked back tears.
“I want to be there when our child is born,” he continued. “I want to watch the kids grow. I want to be there for all of it.”
He paused, his eyes locked on mine.
“I’ve missed too much of my life already.” His voice dropped to a whisper. “And I’m not missing anything else.”
The words settled deep in my chest.
And just like that, everything I had been holding in broke.
A sob tore out of me before I could stop it, my body folding into his as the fear finally found its way out.
All of it.
My fingers clutched his shirt as I cried tears of relief against him, my shoulders shaking.

“I’ve got you,” he murmured against my hair. “And I’m sorry I didn’t discuss my decision with you. It would never happen again.
I believed him without hesitation.
And I could see a blissful, happy life in the future.
Ours.
My breathing slowly evened, and when I finally pulled back, Damon’s hand came up to wipe the tears from my face.
“You’re such a crybaby,” he commented.
I let out a laugh. “I know. I can’t help it.”
“Please, don’t,” he said. “I love everything about you. Even this.”
My heart swelled.
His eyes softened as he looked down at me, something warm and certain settling there.
Then he kissed me again, slow and deep.
He exhaled deeply as he pulled away. “I need to talk to Rhys.”

I nodded.
He pressed a kiss to my temple and brushed his thumb across my cheek one last time before letting me go.
Then he turned and walked back toward Rhys.
I stayed where I was for a second, letting, everything settle inside me, and happy that we had finally talked things through.
That was when I spotted Fiorella a few feet away, her hands twisting in front of her as she stared at me.
My stomach turned slit but I forced myself to walk toward her.

When I finally pulled back, Fiorella was wiping her face with the sleeve of her shirt.
“This situation made me realize I don’t know much about you,” I said.
She forced a smile. “I don’t think anything is interesting about me. What would you like to know?”
“Well,” I said, my eyes searching hers, “you could tell me about your marriage. But I know it’s not something you might be eager to talk about so you can take all the time you need.”
Fiorella nodded. “Alright. Anything else?”
I gave it a quick thought.
There was still a question on my mind, but I didn’t know how to ask it without sounding suspicious.
I cleared my throat awkwardly. “You once told me that you and Damon had a… thing.”
“Are you asking if I used to have sex with Damon?” she asked.
My face flushed. “I want you to clarify.”
She let out an amused laugh. “I only said that because Damon asked me to. I refused initially but he was very desperate to make you hate him.”
“So you guys didn’t really…”
“Damon and I were only close friends,” she answered. “He isn’t the father of my son, if that’s what you’re wondering. My late ex–husband is. But Damon means a lot to me, even if we don’t act like it.”
I nodded in understanding.
“That makes sense,” I said quietly. “He doesn’t really show it, but I’ve noticed.”
“You know he’s not good with things like that.”
“I do,” I replied. “But he learning now.”
She nodded, her gaze dropping for a moment before lifting again. “He changed when you came into his life.”
I tilted my head slightly. “In a good way, I hope.”
“In the best way,” she said without hesitation. “I was right about you all along.”
I didn’t respond immediately.
A brief silence passed, but this time it felt calm.
“Thank you,” she said again, softer now.
I gave a small shrug. “Your son will need you by his side right now. The last thing I want is you worrying about us. You don’t have to keep thanking me.”
“I do,” she insisted.
A sigh escaped me. “No, you don’t. Go be with your son. I’ll come see both of you when we move to Italy.”
Her eyes widened in surprise. “Don’t mess with me right now. You’re really moving?”
A smile formed on my lips.
“Damon feels closer to what’s left of his family there,” I said, unable to hide the excitement in my voice. “You’re not getting rid of me that easily.”

She threw her arms around me excitedly.
“This is great news,” she said, then pulled away. “I can’t wait, Gabby!”
“Me neither,” I responded. “I should get back to Damon now. Call me?”
She nodded but she didn’t move right away.
“I will,” she said. “And Gabby… I won’t forget this. Thank you for keeping my secret.”
“Sure,” I replied “What are friends for?”

was still waiting where I left him. “Hope I didn’t do too much damage?”
I raised a brow. “You think?”
That infuriating smirk settled on his face. “I did what I had to. You weren’t listening to me. Did she change your mind?”
I exhaled slowly.
For a long time, I had wanted out. But it was never just about that. I wanted to make sure no one else had to grow up the way I did.
“Do you really want this?”
Rhys didn’t hesitate. “More than anything. But not enough to kill you for it.”
I knew he meant that.
“Why?” I asked.
The smirk faded. “There are a lot of reasons. Most of them are personal.”
I studied him for a moment, then shook my head slightly. “You’re reckless and impulsive. You won’t survive this world like that.”
Rhys didn’t respond immediately.
He stepped closer, lowering his voice. “I’ve had years to plan. I won’t mess it up when I’m this close.”
I searched his expression, looking for doubt.
I didn’t find any.
“You can have it,” I said finally. “But on one condition.”
His eyes narrowed slightly. “What condition?”

Rhys laughed dryly, running a hand through his hair. “You’re asking me to build something just to destroy it.”
“I’m asking you to take control of it,” I corrected. “So you can end it properly. Or I’ll be forced to do it myself and you might not like my method.”
He held my gaze, something shifting in his eyes. “Are you playing the emotional blackmail card, brother?”
