Act Like You Love Me (Jessica) novel Chapter 226

Chapter 226

Daphne’s POV

The mirror reflected a woman I barely recognized. I sat perfectly still, my fingers hovering over the silk of my mint-green

dress

The neckline dipped low, the fabric clinging to every curve before flowing out into a shimmering pool at my feet.

The diamond necklace David had given me earlier rested perfectly against my skin, catching the light with every small

movement.

My hair was pulled up into a loose, messy bun that still looked intentionally beautiful, a few soft tendrils framing my face

A cream faux-fur shawl was draped over my shoulders. I looked like I belonged to this world of old money and high stakes, even if my nerves were screaming otherwise.

The door clicked shut behind me. I didn’t need to turn around; the scent of his cologne-sandalwood and expensive spice-

eached me first. In the reflection, David appeared like a shadow.

He looked impeccable in a black tuxedo, his presence commanding enough to pull the air from the room.

His lips curled into a slow smirk as he leaned down. I felt his breath against my neck, a warm contrast to the chill in my

Jones.

closed my eyes, letting the sensation travel through me.

He reached out, his fingers brushing a stray tendril of hair away before he pulled my shawl down just enough to press his ips to the curve of my shoulder blade.

You look… glorious,” he murmured against my skin.

Heat rushed to my cheeks. I blushed hard, the compliment settling warmly in my chest.

He took my hand, his grip firm and steady, and helped me stand. I turned to face him, the height difference forcing me to ook up.

David cupped my cheeks, his thumbs tracing the line of my jaw. His gaze was searching, penetrating the mask I’d tried to out on with my makeup.

You’re worried,” he said softly. “I can see it in your eyes.”

took a deep breath, closing my eyes momentarily to keep the tears from spilling over.

‘I am, I whispered “Something feels wrong, David. I have this gnawing sensation in my chest that things aren’t going to go he way we planned”

David squeezed my hands, his touch grounding.

Nothing of the sort will happen. We have everything under control, Daphne. Trust the process

I wanted to believe him. I wanted to sink into that confidence he wore, but the dread stayed

“Let’s go.” he said, offering a small, encouraging smile. The party has begun.”

T’ll grab my clutch”

I broke from his hold, picked up the small silver clutch from the bed, and slipped it under my arm

David held out his hand again. I took it, lacing our fingers together, and we left the villa.

The large double doors of the ballroom stood open when we arrived. David gave my hand one last reassuring squeeze before we stepped inside.

The hall was breathtaking. It had been transformed into something straight out of an old European palace: crystal chandeliers sparkling overhead, deep red drapes framing tall windows, and an orchestra playing soft, elegant music in the background.

People moved in structured, graceful patterns, dancing as if time had stopped in the nineteenth century.

I immediately spotted familiar faces. Jessica and Mika were standing near one of the high tables, both looking stunning in their own gowns.

Jessica wore a deep navy that complemented her dark hair, while Mika had chosen a vibrant crimson that made her look radiant.

As we approached, Jessica’s face lit up.

‘Daphne, you look incredible! That dress is perfect on you.”

Mika nodded enthusiastically. “Absolutely stunning. The color is gorgeous with your skin tone.”

I smiled, genuinely warmed by their compliments.

‘Thank you. Both of you look beautiful too.” I replied, genuinely impressed by their gowns. I turned to Jessica, leaning in slightly.

‘Where’s Adrian? I thought he’d be here.”

‘He’s safe,” Jessica whispered, her eyes darting around the room. “Adrian left for the escort ship with Grandma earlier this evening. We’re keeping the children and the elderly off-site.”

We fell into easy conversation, the three of us chatting about small things to keep the mood light.

As we talked, a waiter approached with a silver tray of champagne flutes. I reached for one, the condensation cool against my

kin, but as the glass touched my hand, a prickle of unease raced up my arm.

I looked at the waiter. He was young, his expression blank, but he lingered a second too long, watching us.

I forced a polite smile, holding the flute but not drinking. The moment he turned away, I glanced over my shoulder.

He was looking back at me, his eyes narrowed before he disappeared into the crowd.

“What is it?” Mika asked, her brow furrowing as she watched my face.

‘I don’t feel right about this, drink,” I said, my voice barely audible.

As if on cue, my gaze was pulled toward the far side of the ballroom. There, partially obscured by a marble pillar, stood a

woman.

She wore a silver gown and a delicate filigree mask, but those grey eyes were unmistakable Lauren Even through the mask. the malice was plain to see

“Don’t drink that.” I told Jessica, my voice gaming strength I found a nearby console table and set the flute down. I think it’s been tampered with Or poisoned.”

Jessica’s face went pale. She looked around, searching for David or Aaron, but they had already vanished back into the crowd to check the security perimeters.

I pulled my phone from my clutch and sent a quick text to David.

Seconds later, my phone buzzed.

‘Do not take anything. Tell Jessica and Mika: no food, no appetizers. If you’re thirsty, find Aunt Kate in the kitchens. She’s the only one we trust with the catering tonight.

I showed the message to Jessica. She read it and nodded, her expression serious.

Mika, who had been watching us, frowned.

“What’s going on? In the last five days a lot of people have left the ship. A lot of family members too. What aren’t you telling

me?”

Jessica glanced around before answering quietly.

“This isn’t the moment for a full explanation, but keep your eyes open for Lauren Walters. She’s here. She’s working with him to sabotage everything.”

Mika’s eyes widened. “I thought she was in prison.”

“So did we,” Jessica said. “Unfortunately, she’s not.”

I added. “Look for anyone wearing a mask. I saw her with one earlier.”

For the next several minutes, the three of us stood in a tight circle, our backs to one another. The beauty of the ballroom had turned into a maze of potential threats.

Every person who walked by felt like a walking bomb.

The music shifted, the violins taking on a more romantic, sweeping tone. David, Aaron, and Lance reappeared from the shadows of the balcony.

David walked straight to me, his hand extending.

“May I have this dance?”

I took it, letting him lead me onto the floor. Aaron did the same with Jessica.

As David pulled me close, his hand resting firmly on the small of my back, he leaned in.

As we moved together. David pulled me closer, his hand warm on my lower back

“I can’t wait for all of this to be over,” he murmured near my car “So we can go back to our normal life and I can do everything I’ve been wanting to do with you.”

I blushed, heat rising to my checks. He twirled me gently, then drew me back against him.

“I can’t wait for that,” I whispered, resting my head against his shoulder as we twirled

The scent of him and the movement of the dance briefly distracted me from the danger.

David the summer is ending. Our trip is almost over. Does that mean the contract ends too?”

I looked at him, my chest tight with equal parts hope and fear.

David went still for a heartbeat. His eyes went blank, unreadable, as the orchestra reached a crescendo.

My heart sank. Was this it? Was I just a part of the plan that was about to be filed away?

Then, a smirk played on his lips. “The contract ended weeks ago, Daphne.”

!felt a sharp pang in my chest.

Oh.” I managed to breathe out, my voice small.

He gripped my waist tighter, pulling me so close I could feel the heat of his body.

Because we’re about to enter a new one. But this one isn’t a business arrangement. It’s a vow.”

pulled back slightly, searching his face.
